I’m watching ending explained type videos because the ending has been on my mind. Saying “I thought I used to know why but now I’m not so sure” and gave her the hug, either 1 he was manipulating her so that when he gets out he has her trust and gets revenge/kills her, or 2 he actually has remorse now. His hug and demeanor really did feel genuine but then again, psychopaths can be very convincing. It could really go either way. I’d like to think he actually has remorse

I watched this film with my whole family thinking it's a funny coming of age movie. This was many years ago but I will never forget that awkward moment.

I think the point was about genetically psychopaths who come from normal homes. And the difficulty of their parents

Eva was a world traveler. La Tomantina is a tomato fight in Spain the do yearly for fun. She was her most free then and it also foreshadows bathing in blood.

Eva‘s husband ruined her life. she went from a joyful young woman who loved traveling to being stuck in the suburbs, taking care of a child that hated her, one she did not want to have.

What is the sad truth is there are a lot of parents with kids like this. Start unconsolable, parent(s) frustration. Then frustration turns to resentment and bitterness as well as a dislike for the child. Then kid(s) are punished and kids feel the same way towards parents. The cycle is created and by then although the parent the whole time was trying to get the child on track, ended up making a wrong decision. The child is aware but unaware, as kids too have the ability to understand right and wrong, but like Kevin, at some point do not care if they do the wrong thing. Maybe in their minds they develop this mentality that regardless of what they do, no one will like them either way.

See also: Eric Harris, one of the Columbine High School murderers. He was a full-blown psychopath, and he adroitly managed to conceal that.
Bottom line: There ARE bad people in the world -- defective units.

I think that the movie is told in the (retrospective) perspective of the mother after her son committed mass murder. It portrays her downplaying her behaviour and villainizing Kevin; she accuses him of emotional manipulation when he doesn’t speak about her physical abuse towards him, when he is a literal child. A toddler. And she perceives him shitting on purpose to inconvenience her. I think that the movie portrays how abusive parents dismiss their behaviour and then act like their children’s issues come from nowhere. When you view your child as a villain, how are you shocked that they become one?

Not sure I agree. She showed love towards the boyfriend /husband and other child , and I did see her try to bond with her son. I don’t like how the mother( who was also struggling with NO emotional support or understanding from anyone!!!!) I have 4 children, one was difficult , and so my life was also clouded and run down dealing with this… in the end came out great , but I really feel like the true victim here was the mother. She lost everything! And her child sadly suffered from physiological issues from birth!!! She did try as much as she could and even sought help from drs and husband who totally dismissed her feelings. Of course she played a role, but SO did the husband by refusing to listen to his wife . I hate how she is blamed for this!!!! You don’t know what it’s like unless you have done it. And if she were sooo bad why the great bond with the daughter??? I cried for all of them… I will say this is the most thoughtful review I have seen towards mother, but still doesn’t deserve so much criticism. I don’t know how this women could even go on..a lot of women struggle with material instincts , but that is not the reason this poor child went the way he did.. there were factors beyond any other persons control here…and let’s not forget the father did do what most people criticize the mother didn’t do and he still killed him! And not in a way where he felt bad he chased him and his sister down like prey!!’
