Washington Avenue needs to be shut off at Tucker going North to car traffic. It should be foot and bike traffic only. That would slow up the cruising.
BTW, no one thinks of Carr Square and Columbus Square as Downtown. They are just close. It’s pretty much Downtown and Downtown West.
I would say this. Make sure the condo has stipulations for Air B&B. Also look for private secured parking if you have a car. You may have to pay for it, so spend the coin. You really don’t need a car but if you need to get packages, just get them picked up at a local facility. There are walkable grocery options now.

Such a cool area, if I worked downtown (although few do these days) I would live in the Arcade building as it is so cool and has a rooftop pool and deck. I would go to ballgames or hockey games 2 or 3 days a week. It's not a family place tho.

I use to live downtown and loved it!!! It definitely fit the urban lifestyle thing. It isn't the most inviting Downtown but it did offer what it was supposed to offer.

You where right about the block system and it does make driving around St Louis super easy along with the freeways.

I will definitely let you know when I move back so you can help me. I'm sure the city has changed just like everything else.

I decided to live in the west end area to have a small yard and be close to Forest Park, which is still very close to downtown, but I have some friends that live downtown and there are things about the traffic. During the summer when Cards games are happening it is very crowded, but you figure out the side streets and alleys to get yourself around. Having on site parking is really a must and then it is ok. You don't want your car on the street. There have been issues with airbnb places renting units to party groups but hopefully this is getting under control. Most of the rest of the year it is quiet.

This isn't one small plus for nightlife, and one small minus for crime. It is THIRTY minuses for crime. Crime is overwhelming in St. Louis, worse than in any city, ANY CITY IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE. Jesus..that takes in a lot of territory. NO CITY IN NORTH AMERICA, EUROPE, OR ASIA HAS A HIGHER CRIME RATE THAN ST. LOUIS.

There are 950 unsolved murders in St. Louis, for the period of 2013-2021. The "solve" rate is 44%. If you walk six blocks downtown at night, the chances are 100% that you're walking past murderers. Local estimates that if you live in downtown St. Louis your entire life, you will brush past no fewer than 96 different murderers in your life.

Ive been looking at the loft market out in STL for that last couple of years. They are so. cheap. for what youre getting and the ascetic is 100% my vibe! Im considering making the move soon. I will definitely reach out if I do! Im not scared by the crime, as people said the same thing about Detroit before I moved there. I loved D-town and only left because of the pandemic. My house was broken into in the middle of the day in Colorado Springs, CO....considered one of the best cities to live in. Crime happens everywhere.

People in STL county suburbs say they never go downtown or the city anymore..I find that somewhat questionable as almost everything to do is in the city. Ballgames, hockey, museums, symphony, big concerts. All is either downtown or 5 mins away within the city. Yes there are nice restaurants in the county but what else do you do? Stay at home and watch tv? I live north of Delmar and crime is very much overblown. If you dont like city living and live in a suburban neighborhood then great! Just dont trash you own town all the time. No one outside of St. Louis cares about Chesterfield, Webster Groves, or St. Charles.

Being from the South Side of St Louis but living in Tx when I'm home, I move around the city differently than I do here in Tx. You can have a good time there, but you also have to watch out for the guys who are trying to pull fast ones on you. Like any big city, as long as you pay attention to your surroundings and enjoy trying only the foods that belong to St Louis.

I so appreciate these videos. Incredibly informative. I lived in a super busy restaurant/bar neighborhood in San Francisco for 20 years, so downtown living in St. Louis is totally my vibe. I'm still about 3-4 years out from relocating but St. Louis is totally where I'm gonna get a downtown condo and retire. This has really helped me start planning. And now that my Oakland A's broke my heart and are moving to Vegas, I'm getting on the Cardinal's train. Keep up the great work!

I'm still trying to find a place that I could call home in the future. After seeing the rent for downtown STL, it's seems like a steal. Being able to get to the airport without stepping foot in a car is a MUST. I guess my only hesitation would be what kind of jobs are available to me and I guess... the crime... Other than that it seems great, and a new Soccer stadium??? Man, it's between here, Chicago, Seattle, or back to the DC area!

I can walk most areas in most European cities at dead midnight and not fear for my safety. I wouldn't be caught ever walking around St Louis at night. Ever. Born and raised there and left. Best choice I've ever made. The city has shrunk to below 300k for a reason. If aren't a wealthy hipster that lives over on the west end, the city is trash.

My mother lived in a downtown apartment loft in the mid 2010s, and I must tell you, she had a beautiful apartment. It was on Washington Ave, and it was very clean, safe (as in the building itself), and very centrally located and walkable. It was so nice that I strongly considered moving to that area. HOWEVER, her car got broken into all the time... and I mean ALL the time. She parked in an open air lot that was supposedly monitored instead of paying extra for a garage parking space, so I would suggest paying extra for more secured parking.

We live several hours away from StLouis in a somewhat rural area. A coworkers daughter graduated college and wanted to live the city against his advice. . Moved downtown near the dome. Within two months her car windows were broken out, got mugged and was threatened in the foyer of her building. Called Dad crying and his words to her were “That’s city life.” She moved.

As one who lives in "downtown STL" ... Points you missed or just plain got wrong:

1. Public transportation in downtown Saint Louis is as good as the best cities in the USA, maybe not as good as NYC or Denver, but close. Walk score at my condo is 94. That is nothing to sneeze at. I specifcally moved to downtown to use public transportation for work. Adequate and cheap public transportation to anything and anywhere in the world, super easy public transportation -- or even WALK to Amtrak, Greyhound -- train to Saint Louis International Airport, walk or bus to car rental locations, street car rentals, scooters, Uber, Lyft, Taxi. Yes, trains are not that safe and neither are some bus stops. But ON the busses are generally quite safe and pleasant. I speak fro. Experience as one who went 7 years without a vehicle in Downtown ST Louis, like about 15% of other residents.

2. Stay off Wash Ave, Locust, Broadway, and Tucker and crime goes down by about a factor of at least 10. Locals know where and when it is safe to walk, which streets are monitored by live police cameras -- everywhere. Do not frequent by homeless camps and drug corners and you will be fine.

3. Ask locals living here what they least like and it is in no particular order
a)out of control AirBnB parties,
b) street racing and lack of traffic law enforcement,
c) 3 AM liquor license facilities and bar owners who cannot manage their patrons.
d) 2-4:30 AM garbage collection slamming dumpsters around and back up beepers.

More neighborhood dislikes:
4) disrespectful downtown events who take resident parking away during events (cordoned off or illegal parking of visitors) and out of town visitors who trash the neighborhood during and after events.

5) Lack of building security and porch pirates stealing packages. (Moving to downtown? ASK about building security measures. You will pay out the nose for it in HOA fees, but it is well worth it to have your building and packages safe.)

6) Downtown Saint Louis, while it has great resturants and bars, is sorely lacking in grocery and big box shopping choices and is absolutely a food desert. But hey, with the tacked on CID taxes in the district, I rather grocery shop in Illinois for the tax savings anyway. You have no car to go shopping? Try Uber Eats, Instscart, Walmart+. Literally, you could hole up and never keave your condo building at all and live quite well. IMO, IDEAL for an elderly person who needs to be close to great medical facilities (BJC and Saint Louis University Hospital down the street just 3-4 miles.)

Best of all:
If you DO move downtown, consider a high rise condo with a sunrise or sunset view -- Saint Louis City has some really amazing sunset views. Live above the 3rd floor for safety. Buy or rent a place that includes enclosed parking. If you rent, parking is about $100-150/ month extra. Enclosed parking seriously improves chances your car will not get broken into. (Every day my vehicle is parked on the street and still has its catalytic converter is a miracle to me.) OH yeah, and KIA Bois is a resl thing. Do not dare park a KIA or Hyundai into Downtown St. Louis.

65 and lifelong St Louis resident. Before moving to St Louis, watch the local news spanning a few weeks, or rent a hotel room downtown for a few days. Be ready to have your car broken into wherever you are.

Had jury duty downtown many times. Always wore my bright yellow jury badge on the outside of my coat so people would see it and leave me alone. I walked from the courts building to Union Station for lunch no problem. As soon as my service ended and I had no badge, it became a different world on my way home. Homeless made ugly comments and followed me asking for money, vagrants screamed at me when I crossed the street to get away from them. The parking garage we used was always filthy and poorly lit. There is no romance about St Louis downtown.

And one of our Cardinals fans was shot, and partially paralyzed for life as he exited the game and was shot in front of the stadium by men trying to shoot someone else.

I’ve lived in the suburbs of St. Louis for 31 years. I have lived in 13 different towns. St. Louis is my absolute favorite. I’m proud of this city, however, understand that St Louis is about 300 thousand. Towns surrounding St Louis total over 2.8 million. You would have to be crazy to live downtown. Period. Every city has its bad areas. St. Louis has very bad areas. Just know and don’t go.
