Resurgence is a 32 map megawad made almost entirely by Joshy, with an appearance from Darkwave0000. In my opinion, Resurgence is the work of a mature Mapper. Having already collaborated with Darkwave on their now classic megawad Speed of Doom, led community projects like Plutonia Revisited, and contributed to many others like Community Chest 4 and Back to Saturn X Episode 2, it seems to me that Joshy finally felt able to craft his own solo project.
Resurgence can be thought of as a spiritual successor to Speed of Doom. It elaborates on and tweaks many of the design philosophies seen in that WAD, and contains a lot of references to SOD as well. It also generally follows in the footsteps of the classic WADs of old that very often get used as influences while mixing in some new styles, relative to the times and Joshy's own tendencies.
You'll see soon enough in this play through just how much Joshy's map design has evolved for the better. His maps in Speed of Doom did have positive aspects to them, but they were generally uncomfortable experiences for me. His Resurgence maps on the other hand are gorgeous, brutal, beautifully scored, and slightly more forgiving.

For some reason I had some trouble with this map, more than 90% if the maps so far. The amount of demons in this cramped space kind of reminds of something Speed of Doom Joshy would do. I don’t mind his older style in micro doses, so this map was still pretty fun to clear.
There’s always some bastard hurling things at you in this map, none more annoying than the Cyberdemon who never seems to care about anyone else but me. This map has a lot of things going on so I doubt you’ll have the time to always be watching him. The most dangerous part for me was the stretch of gameplay from the red key to hitting the switch right after it. Having to deal with those Revenants who seem to never infight with the Cyberdemon with everything else that’s going on is pretty crazy.
Anyway, the Cyberdemon won’t actually pose much of a threat when you’re by yourself with him. If you sit at the edge of that elevated part and shoot him with the SSG then you should be fine. My only complaint is that secret. Why is it there? If Joshy’s plan was to make the player risk getting a point-blank Cyberdemon rocket than that’s just stupid. It’s only useful for the Arch Vile at the end which just feels a little pointless to me. This map was still pretty fun nonetheless.
