Main Street Uvalde’s Honors and Hors d’oeuvres that celebrated the perseverance, preservation, and people that make downtown Uvalde so very special. These awards are designed to recognize and thank the business owners, volunteers, building owners, and community partners who demonstrate excellence in downtown revitalization, economic development, education, beautification, and promotion by actively working to differentiate and enhance the quality of life for Uvalde residents present and future. These honors are an opportunity for the Uvalde Main Street Program to showcase the unique efforts and attributes of the awardees, and call attention to the tangible benefits an engaged community can create.
The Heart of Downtown Award- Jan Elliot
This award is given for efforts that positively affect how people feel about Downtown Uvalde and the work of the Main Street Uvalde program. The Heart of Downtown Award recipient actively contributes to the growth, vitality, support for, and overall appeal of Downtown Uvalde. This year’s winner couldn’t be with us tonight, because they are one of the busiest people I’ve ever met and their latest grandchild came two weeks early. This individual was on the original Main Street planning committee and advisory board and over the past ten years has served on the Uvalde CVB Board that oversees the Main Street program. They are an advocate for the arts and for preservation and because of their extreme generosity Main Street was able to create it children’s activity & coloring book and bring you the Looking Back to Move Forward downtown photography exhibit. This person isn’t just a project patron they are a patron saint for downtown.
The People's Choice Award- Small Town Elegance
On any given day there are approximately 23,000 people who travel through the crossroads of our beautiful downtown. We wanted to give those people a voice as to which business was their favorite. With over 200 businesses to choose from this was no easy task, but the voters took to the online poll and spoke.The Up & Coming Business Award- Carlito's way
This award is given in recognition to a relatively new kid on the block that has been in business between one and three years approximately. It celebrates a business who has shown true gumption and a can-do attitude. Even when Covid made things complicated and threatened to shut things down, this business got creative and got curb-side.
The Unsung Hero Award- Steve and Ellen Balke
This award is given to recognize those who step up and make a difference. The Unsung Hero award celebrates an individual or organization who has significantly impacted downtown Uvalde by contributing time and energy to improving the downtown area for businesses, residents, and tourists with their volunteerism and philanthropic spirit. This year’s winner or winners I should say are the epitome of the ultimate volunteers. They are not only champions for the Main Street program, but for our city and the arts.
The Alliance Award- Uvalde Grand Opera House
This award recognizes a person, business, or organization who has shown exemplary commitment and partnership with the Uvalde Main Street program though time given, resources, and leadership. The downtown or commercial district is positively impacted, and the community is inspired by and through their advocacy, education, and promotion of downtown revitalization and the Main Street program’s efforts and missions. This year’s Alliance winner has been a beacon for art, culture, music, fun, and for the occasional ghost. Their positive impact on downtown and the community has been felt for 130 years.
The Cornerstone Award- Edwards Furniture
This award recognizes a business that serves as an anchor to the downtown community economically, socially, culturally and civically. This business has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to downtown by sponsoring downtown events, promoting community partnerships and engagement and by supporting the Uvalde Main Street program, while being an exemplary business leader. This business has even been known to truly go the extra mile by decorating and dressing up or even the craziest 4 Square Friday theme, throwing a great block party, and more importantly for serving the Uvalde community for over 39 years.
The Shining Star Award- Joe Gutierrez
This award honors an outstanding individual or organization that through a special (not for personal profit) project or program that helps to make the downtown area/Main Street district and Uvalde a great place in which to live, work, and play. They are a shining star of great public service, commitment to the community, and by putting quality into what they do. This person didn’t contribute or work on any one specific project, they worked on dozens of them. No matter the problem, request, or idea, this person makes it all happen without a hitch or complaint. This person and their amazing team truly make Uvalde shine.
