One of the most useful things to remember when manoeuvring is that the REAR wheels cannot move 'sideways' without the steering from the front wheels.
As long as you pull forward OR reverse to the point at which there is a clear distance between the rear wheel and any hazardous obstruction, the rear of the car CAN'T move sideways into that object.
