The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is hearing "Securing Americans Genetic Information: Privacy and National Security Concerns Surrounding 23andMes Bankruptcy Sale."

The hearing will explore the national security and data privacy concerns resulting from the recent bankruptcy filing of 23andMe, Inc., a direct-to-consumer genetic testing company in possession of millions of Americans’ personal DNA data. In May, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals announced it entered into an asset purchase agreement to acquire 23andMe.

Twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia on Monday filed a lawsuit in bankruptcy court seeking to block the sale of personal genetic data by 23andMe without customer consent.

Delete your data if you used this company, they can claim that the buyers are agreeing to abide by the current privacy tos but for how long? A year? 6 months? Don’t risk it just download your raw data and delete it before it’s sold.

Oh, dear libs, you are not listening to these people -- you are potentially forcing the destruction of valuable data of people who cannot "opt in." People who signed the agreements, and who potentially may have had a dying wish to indeed have a piece of themselves floating out there to share with the world for as long as it could exist. Ayana Pressley would have that destroyed? Kind of terrible -- it's not a yes/no answer, dummeh. Lose the attitude an listen to what she said: Her sister had a dying with to share her genetics for research. People signed this open ended understanding of what they had committed to.
