Although arches have been used in architecture since the second millennium B.C., it was the Romans who solidified them as an engineering feature and a symbol of military victories, which we now see in abundance as memorial arches. Different civilizations and cultures adopted the arch for their own reasons shortly after, bridging the gap between structural necessity and aesthetics. In this post, we'll look at how arches progressed from important structural parts to eye-catching aesthetic accents.

Similar to how the purpose of arches changed over time with different civilizations, the shape of arches altered as well. The Romans used the semicircular arch for bridges and large structures, whereas the Abbasids (a caliphate that dominated the Arab, Persian, and Mesopotamian territories) chose the pointed arch, which gave rise to its religious and grandiose connotations. Following their use in mosques, pointed arches were widely utilized in cathedrals throughout Medieval Europe, and vaults were built.

The function of arches changed over time as different civilizations used them, and the shape of arches changed as well. The Romans used the semicircular arch for bridges and large structures, but the Abbasids (a caliphate that dominated the Arab, Persian, and Mesopotamian territories) used the pointed arch, which gave rise to its religious and grandiose connotations. Following their use in mosques, pointed arches were widely employed in cathedrals throughout Medieval Europe, and were eventually evolved into vaults, resulting in the two basic design components of Gothic architecture. During the Middle Ages, segmental arches were developed to improve the load-bearing capacity of bridge constructions. Catenary arches were widely used in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, transforming the arch from a structural accomplishment to an architectural one.

Structure
Masons have used the structural properties of arches to build gigantic constructions that are still standing today since the dawn of civilization. Arches are considered more advantageous than lintels and horizontal beams in terms of engineering since they can be assembled with less material and span larger openings. The reason behind this is that downward pressure drives the voussoirs (the stones that make the arch's shape) together and downwards, rather than outwards, towards the bulky vertical supports. Repetitive rows of arches and their vertical supports are positioned consecutively in the case of smaller vertical supports, allowing the imposed weight to be divided along the arcade (series of arches).

These arches and vaults were rehabilitated as part of adaptive reuse projects today, retaining their structural functions but with a refined contemporary finish.

Openings in the Facade
Several adaptive reuse projects preserved the shape of its arched doors and windows, bridging the gap between the historic and the modern. This old x new design style strikes a balance between classic components that elicit feelings of warmth and familiarity and modern elements that elicit feelings of edge and energy. Adding arched openings to modern architecture's simple and linear geometric features produces a visual contrast, energizing the facade and structure as a whole. Arched windows and doors were defined as a "child-friendly approach, adding curves to the walls and an arched window for each child" in some residential constructions.

Partition / Wall
Arched interior walls and partitions are another way architects and designers have used arches in their designs. As previously stated, arches have excellent load-bearing properties, therefore having arched interior walls and partitions will not create any structural issues. Instead, the design functions as a subtle intervention, opening two rooms together while retaining their individual boundaries.

The theme on Wall
Designers construct an additional "fake wall" right in front of the existing one to create a dual-space and depth illusion in projects when the room is limited. These artificial walls are frequently different in scale and finish to emphasize the contrast between the two. However, because these patterns are primarily used for ornamental or conceptual purposes, they have little to no role in supporting the weight of the ceiling above them.

The usage of arch-shaped installations is hardly random or coincidental, as installations are all about first impressions. These installations are considered as appealing constructions that establish visual continuity and provide a feeling of direction for its guests, in addition to intentional design concepts and the reasons described above. Visitors still feel as if the structure is embracing them.
