Here are a few more details about the carrot washing and packing process.

🥕 I prefer using a pressure washer for our carrots and parsnips. It really helps get them extra clean and it saves a lot of water too. If you go the same route, be careful getting started because too much pressure can really damage your carrots. Today I use a 1300 PSI washer with a short wand and a 40º nozzle. I wear a rubber glove on my left hand to protect my skin from the high pressure spray.

🥕 The fabric I am using to cover our carrots now is called Baby Blanket. It’s a “felted jute grass mat that is processed by a water method and not treated chemically. This food safe product is grown and manufactured using organic practices.” I originally bought ours for some soilless microgreen trials, but I like using it for this purpose more. Ours was from Mumm’s Sprouting Seeds, a Saskatchewan microgreen seed supplier. We have no affiliation. We have also used burlap and old t-shirts as the absorbent fabric and they both work too.

🥕 Yes, I am aware that some people recommend storing carrots in sand. I tried this once years ago and found it much more labour intensive, harder to maintain the right moisture level, and really annoying to always have sand on my carrots. I love just being able to reach into our bins anytime to grab a clean carrot that’s ready to eat.

🥕 Early in the video, you see me cutting off the stems, but you’ll notice in the washing crates that there are still stubby stems left on most of the carrots. The carrots will store well like this for at least 3 months, but if those stems are left on the carrots, they will eventually start to sprout. Around January, I will go through our remaining carrots and top them with a knife. By removing the top of the carrot just under the base of the stem, we prevent them from sprouting for the rest of their storage period.

I hope these tips help you with your carrot storage. Today, this is just one of the many crops we enjoy eating from our garden on a year-round basis thanks to our storage efforts.
