A WORD FROM CHRIS

It's been a literal decade since I released my original short film, and with vampires coming back into the mainstream, now seemed like the perfect time to revisit that genre. However, there's been a lot of development with TURNED over the last ten years, and what started out as a fun short has now evolved into four feature scripts and about a thousand years of lore.

It should come as no surprise that my end goal here is to make TURNED into a feature franchise, but since that still seems like a ways off, I figured the best thing I can do to scratch that creative itch is to release another short.

Now if I'm being 100% honest here, I originally had no intention of making a follow up short whatsoever. This short sequel only came about thanks to one insanely unprofessional actor bailing on an entirely different project the night before, which co-starred Brittany Maupin (Emma). I felt so bad for her about the last minute cancellation, that I sat down with Brittany and we discussed alternative projects we do while I began the arduous task of recasting the other project. Brittany wanted a role that was heavy on the action, so I started combing through my BCU catalog of characters that she might fit. Emma, who is the main protagonist of my TURNED II feature script, immediately jumped out at me. I showed Brittany the art I had done for the character and gave her a rundown on Emma's backstory, and that was pretty much it.

I spent the next 24 hours coming up with the script. At first I wanted to just film the introduction to Emma from the actual feature script, but unfortunately, that scene was a little too big of a financial undertaking. So I ended up just writing something completely new. I thought about bringing back surviving characters from the first short, but it just wasn't a viable option. So I decided to do a clean break and let TURNED II (the short) stand completely on its own. This way, apart from just wanting to know more about the lore, you don't need to watch the 2015 short film to enjoy it.

Production lasted 2 days, starting with day one at the scenic overlook in Hollywood, and day two being the actual meat and potatoes of the shoot. I got really lucky with the weather for the scenic overlook, as it was incredibly overcast that whole day, thus alleviating my fear of actors having to squint in bright sunlight. The vehicle used in the scene is a 1975 Mustang, conveniently named the Monster, with an engine roar that will make your ears bleed.

Day two was shot in my favorite alley in Hollywood. It's covered in graffiti and perfectly lit for evening shoots. Believe it or not, I actually choreographed both fights in the film myself. In the past I've worked with fight choreographers and stunt coordinators, but when you do it long enough, you tend to pick up a few things here and there.
