I do not understand the purpose of reaching out sites that are my competitors and ask them to insert a link do my site on a post, why would they do that? If they are big sites and understand SEO, they will sure understand what we are trying to do. Why would they do that for free and "help us" to rank better?

I just had a quick question what if you reach out to blogs and websites for back links on step 1 and 2 and nobody gets back for those or broken links, would you just try the other steps/strategies and hope that some of those work? I have had problems in the past with no responses for lots of the strategies so just wanted to know many any work around to get ranked higher without many or any backlinks
