Would not it have been better for having a footstep on the left and a spring-loaded locking mechanism?

Stepping on the footstep, the carrier rotates into horizontal position and locks there. There is no lifting -- and even more significantly: No stooping and potential back injuries.

By the way: The central pivot is not in the ideal position.
