Rabbi Yaacov Benamou, JewishROC: 00:28 - 09:30
Mr. Rachid Zein, Embassy of Morocco: 10:20 - 14:45
Gnawa (Ismail Bouzidoune & Ensemble Fanaa): 14:46-25:28
On April 28, 2019, about 500 people celebrated Moroccan narratives of unity, goodwill and friendship with SHIN DC at the National Museum of African Art by enjoying a taste of Morocco's rich culture, including Jewish and Gnawa: Ensemble Fanaa and Ismail Bouzidoune performed Gnawa music live and we ate traditional post-Passover Moroccan Jewish delicacies.
Rabbi Benamou of JewishROC who is from Morocco shared about the meaning of the festival and Mr. Rachid Zein of the Embassy of Morocco also honored us by speaking. SHIN DC Director Franz Afraim Katzir shared about how important it is to root out intolerance everywhere, especially in light of the horrible recent shooting at a synagogue in San Diego.
Mimouna and its Moroccan narratives show us that diversity can be a strength versus a source of conflict, so let us be kind to each other. Trbakho utsa'ado! May you have success and good fortune!
Thank you to sponsors with SHIN DC and the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution. This program was generously sponsored by the Embassy of Morocco. Thanks also to the AJC; Association Mimouna; JxJ (Washington Jewish Music Festival & Film Festival); Amina & Aicha; In Memory of Dr. Roger G. Breeze, A"H.
