I've been a DM/GM/ST forever since '78. I CAN COUNT ON LESS THAN TWO HANDS HOW MANY PCs I HAVE PLAYED!

When I do get to actually play I try to be reasonable. Except this one time, in a min-max player's 3.5 campaign...

I built a Human Fey-blooded Warlock. I pulled out ALL the stops. By 8th-9th level Imbo could See Invisible, had darkvision, had DR 4/Cold Iron, and his Eldritch Blast could be Acid (SR was useless!). He took the boost for Charisma skills plus Use Magic Device, so he could activate any wand.

He was irritatingly, epically broken. And Chaotic Neutral to boot; Imbo loved and respected his party members so he did his best to spare them, but no weirdness was beyond him for everyone else.

It was a hoot!

I dm'd once and made it impossible to win because I felt like adding monsters a lot of powerful monsters

the Sound Effect DM is honestly the only DM that put it alotta effort in the session.

There's also "the dm who fears that one chaotic evil player purely based on previous interactions with them before even suggesting starting a session, and now has to scramble to save the lives of 20 villagers solely because said chaotic evil wants to burn the village down"
I feel very bad for my DM. He's practically babysitting the problem-child. That is me, I am the problem child 😊

After the rules lawyer DM I half expected to see a rule breaker dm that's like "Oh, so you don't think that's allowed? Well point me to- gets handed a rulebook and immediately throws it over his shoulder yeah that's what I thought."

DnD is absolutely AMAZING. But as a video game........

I'm the DM that hands out magic items like candy to see what wacky and/or interesting things the players do with them. I also heavily reward creative ideas and almost always allow rule of cool above rules as written

No DM is ever prepared. We just have a vague idea of what the players might do and prepare for that.

Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.

i read most of the book im running as i run it so uh very very unprepaired

I'm that DM that is chill and doesn't worry about the rules. Give me enough lore about that race so I can alter my home-brew on the fly, I only write small plot ideas but worry mostly on the characters and the npcs so the plot drives itself, and I just make EVERYTHING up on the spot. I'm just here to enjoy myself with a good story instead of stressing a lot about many things.

It may not be for everyone, but my players like it. And I like it.

im a kinda new dm i dmed like 4-5 sessions for my homie cuz i told him it could be fun gettign into dnd (it is for both of us) and i think i do alot better than the newbie dms showed on the internet lmao

My first foray into DMing 5e and I created an encounter specifically so 1 player could feel like a badass by using one of their lesser used moves. They didn't remember about it until Round 5 and the Warrior was dead dead. Not doing that again. I did learn as awful lot from that though.

I used to DM for a while. But I only knew the basic rules, so I made most everything up. Everyone still had fun, because I kept things interesting with my humor, interesting areas, plot twists and epic boss battles. I came with some pre-made things, and was able to make the rest up on the fly because I'm pretty creative and probably actually BECAUSE I wasn't too familiar with the more complex rules. Still, I was a noob DM, and my players were probably the most difficult people in the world to keep focused long enough to do one simple thing. In an entire session, we maybe did one quest. But I had them laughing, and I believe we all had fun anyways. But man, DMing is stressful! The number one thing you need is players who will shut up when you really need them to!

My sister is the rule lawyer DM. Takes all the fun out of D&D for me

Why does all the descriptions (except for the veteran, train, and rule lawyer) fit me 💀

My proudest moment as a DM was when I was planning one of the last sessions and thought: "How will the players derail the ending?" I had a small epiphany of something crazy and so I prepared a little extra just for it. Then they went and did exactly that thing. Sadly they rolled very poorly so their crazy plan kind of fell apart so they had to go back to plan A.

As a first time dm, I USE GLOOMHAVEN MAP TILES BECAUSE I DONT HAVE ANY BATTLE MAPS. Anyway, im sure that wont be confusing

DM's only need one aspect, excessively active imaginations. I don't need notes. I rarely need books. I like tools, minis are fun, but nothing tops imagination.There's nothing players can do that I haven't already thought of first.

Believe it or not, I’m the prepared DM. My issue is that I prepare for long sessions and then they last for 2 hours

I’m a variant of the SFX DM known as the Music DM and boy does battle music and area ambience get my players PUMPED UP
