The Impact of War on Journalism in Ukraine: Olga Tokariuk

In her talk, Olga Tokariuk focused on the impact Russian full-scale invasion had on Ukrainian journalists, their professional and personal life. Based on her own experience, interviews with her colleagues and research conducted since February 2022, she presented challenges and opportunities Ukrainian journalists and media organizations are currently facing.
Olga has vast experience working with Ukrainian and international media. Her professional interests include international relations and disinformation research. Her reports were published and aired by TIME, The Washington Post, The Daily Beast, NPR, New Lines Mag (USA), Monocle (UK), EFE (Spain), Il Foglio, ANSA (Italy). She is a former head of foreign news desk at the independent Ukrainian Hromadske TV.
Olga worked on several disinformation research projects and was the lead author of Mythos Labs' reports on Russian disinformation/propaganda related to invasion of Ukraine. Olga Tokariuk holds an MA in political science and international relations from the University of Bologna (Italy) and an MA in journalism from the Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv (Ukraine). In her Journalist Fellowship at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, in Oxford, UK, Olga will be focused on the topic of disinformation and the impact on democratic societies.
This lecture was a collaboration between the Arthur V. Mauro Institute for Peace & Justice at St. Paul’s College, the University of Manitoba Peace and Conflict Studies Graduate Programs, and the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies at the University of Manitoba.
