Don't change those screws just get a board and screw them into a board to cover where the ends come out. It will hold so much better especially when you are driving and if that wood is particle board it will just deteriorate quickly and the screws will loosen and then your ladder will fall. No one will even notice a couple boards over where those screws are coming out.

Be sure to put antiseptic on that cut , in case any bugs get in and causes something nasty . I think it looks very nice so don’t you go worrying yourself . A good template cutter . Maybe Mazzy you could pop,a couple of different colours on the bits you didn’t get done . Would no nails be any better for you Dan . We use that sometimes and it is very good .

Dan get some countersunk metal thread bolts also some screw snap caps under head from inside bedroom and put nuts on on garage the caps come in brown colours and will blend in with other caps in van.

If the shorter screws come loose, search for plasterboard fixings. There are some that go through a hole then pull flat as you screw into them making them less likely to pull out. Any excess screw length could be cut off with a hacksaw.
