Zatanna Zatara is a female superhero (superheroine) plus both a stage magician and an actual magician, who appears in DC Comics.
To show you the sort of adventures that she gets involved in; after the 2014 comic book cover first shown, more covers are presented, in chronological order, from 1967 to 2022.
The narrative is in general chronological order, but is not intended to match up with specific comic book covers.
The character of Zatanna Zatara was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Murphy Anderson, and first appeared in Hawkman No. 4 in 1964 (cover-dated November 1964), although not on the cover.
In that issue, both Hawkman and Hawkgirl each find a paralyzed girl in a magician’s costume speaking gibberish.
When they bring the twins together they merge into one person, Zatanna.
She thanks them for their help and tells them of her quest to find her father Zatara.
Her father Zatara, had made his first appearance in comic books long before that, in Action Comics No. 1, in 1938 (cover-dated June 1938), which also happens to be the very first comic book to feature Superman.
Zatanna has mystic powers, much like her father Giovanni "John" Zatara.
As such she has many of her father's powers relating to magic, typically controlled by speaking the words of her incantations spelled backwards.
Her powers originate from her homo magi heritage, an off-shoot of humanity capable of naturally manipulating magic energies.
Her original costume is based upon her father’s costume but substituting fishnet stockings and high heels for slacks.
She is known for her involvement with the Justice League and Justice League Dark, having served as a leadership figure for both teams; plus she has appeared outside of these teams with various other superheroes.
In 1972 she joins the Justice League and this coincides with her temporarily switching her original costume for a skin tight one-piece combat suit.
She also appears with Superman and Batman in this costume.
In 1987 she had a one issue special, which was a condensation of what had been envisioned as a four issue mini-series.
In 1993 she got her first comic book series, consisting of four issues, which featured her in various costumes, culminating in a battle with the character called Xaos.
In 2005 she was in a four issue comic book series, titled Seven Soldiers: Zatanna.
From 2006 to 2007 she appeared in the Catwoman comic book series.
From 2010 to 2011 she had a 16 issue comic book series.
She was later heavily portrayed in the Justice League Dark comic book series.
More recently she has appeared multiple times with Batman.
Zatanna made a live-action appearance as a recurring character in the final three seasons of Smallville, portrayed by actress Serinda Swan.
