Dave Smith: OB-6 vs Pro6 // The Definitive Comparison

The unison was amazing. The Prophet 6 has so much deep weight, while the OB 6 is just wild. Both meant in a good way. Crazy how different the characters are.

Would you either recommend one of the two or the UDO super6? I cant make a decision - I really like all of them but I’m afraid the super6 is a bit limited with classic bass sounds … also not to sure whether the super6 is more of a modular approach and less keyboardy … any suggestions:-)?

ob6 is an edgey grungy p6 which is a bit more focused and smoother. so hard to choose which one if only could have one. i think the real test would be how they would sit in a mix and depending on genre i think overall the p6 would be a bit more forgiving and would be able to cross genres a lot more. if you want 80's or particular sounds or if you want to make moody synthwave or john carpenteresque soundscapes then the ob6 would be the dream synth to own.

Great review ! I'd roughly say that I would take Prophet for leads and OB for pads ;) i if one can't afford both, wich is my case. Thanks for this video, i've been watching it a lot of times.

I wondder how REV-2 and OB-6 would stack up against each other.

OB-6, or any Oberheim synthesizer is so unique that you can't not notice them in a crowd of synthesizers. Their personality is the strongest I have ever heard from any synthesizers. When that "tune-shifted" smooth mellow sounds with "nano-particles" feel rises up I will immediately recognize that it's an Oberheim. OB-6 is a true masterpiece, which combined the advantage of Sequential Synth(which is easy to program and has rubust built quality) with the classic Oberheim sound. It's just a amazing choice. Sounds extremely rich and iconic. Sometimes it might not be able fit into a mix becasue it's just too unique...but I believe it's the best addition to an existing set up(for example if you already have a TAKE5 or Prophet6 or something). But I heard Behringer is making an UB-Xa and it also sounds insane...considering the price of OB-6...here I come Behringer😂

Prophet 6 is just classic clean cut synth sound… can get the same sounds out of a Rev 2

Save yourself $1,100 by getting the OB-6 desktop and use a controller with 61 keys or more. The Prophet X as a controller for the OB-6 desktop would be a killer combo! The flagship Roland Fantom would be sweet too. Add the Prophet 10 and I can't see ever needing much more synth wise.

For me the Prophet sounds like its trying to do what the Oberheim can do but never quite gets there. It can't quite deliver those low growls and lacks that deep full richness. A telecaster trying to impersonate a Les Paul good at what it does but not quite got the muscles for those big sounds which the Oberheim does with simplicity and ease.

Yo i love you for this video. I can hear the difference in both. I can also hear distinct tones that bring to mind certain songs that were produced with the original versions of these synths.

IMO, the OB6 looks cool and sounds cool, perhaps for electronic music Genre. The Prophet 6 sounds very classy for ones leisure or entertainment. Interesting video !

The problem with these synths is that once you have one, you start wondering about the other one. I guess that's why so many peeps end up with both :)

Could you please compare the Pro 3 to the OB6 and Prophet 6 since it has those filters.
Im not convinced by the Pro 3 state variable filter.

wish you had compared filters at similar resonances, you just immediately crank the prophet to self resonance, when the ob cant go that high, shoulda maybe tried the prophet at half resonance for more than half a second.

In reality they both sound pretty similar - in the mix you wouldnt her the difference.

Can somebody tell me wich syntheziser is better for me and my music in my first opinion the ob 6 is the first choice because it's sounds Brighter, phatter and love the way how the Filter sounds. I make Hip Hop with hard beats but always with a Toach of spacy funky sounds, Biggest influence of course parliament, George Clinton and prince but my sound is very harder and minimalistic couse its hip hop , i make the basses with my moog little phatty and i need the Other synth for funky Surfaces an leads, from Sound like 70's80's style. Wath ist the better the decession for my sound.

Prophet sounds much closer, punchier and tight. OB great for back Pads or something. Thank you for great work🙏🏻

agreed re the Soundtower plugin, janky as hell, eventually gave up on it as was more often than not getting in the way of music as opposed to enabling creativity. Additionally, lost a couple of really nice patches I was not able to achieve the specific detail of again due to issues with saving.

OB-6 every time

OB wins here. You can easily make a synth sound smoother if needed, but you can't give the thing punch, guts in a natural way if that's needed. OB-6 all the way.

Both boards are arguably multi faceted in regards to the wide palette of sounds they are capable of synthesizing but IMO (and this is purely just my personal take) The Prophet excels at leads, pads and plucks and the OB Excels at Leads, pads and bass.

I think given the option, I would personally take a Prophet 5 Rev4 over the Prophet 6 and an OB 6 over both of them.

That is great video as always! Thanks Starsky! How about the knobs on both? Are the sturdy or wobbly? I wanted the OB-6 for a long time but it is very expensive in the EU. So if I decide to go for it I want to have an OB-6 with sturdy build quality/sturdy knobs. Have heard/read to much negative on the quality of the knobs. :(

If people are saving up for these I would buy the OB6 and get a prophet plug in. Money left over for toilet paper.

Ob sounds more naturally saturated

Had both, kept the OB-6. It sits with my Prophet 10 rev 4. Never liked the prophet 6 much, your video shows the kinda distant feel it has (no presence) vs the OB-6/Prophet rev 4.

The blessing and curse of the ob6 is it always sounds like an Oberheim.

Very good comparison. To me the Prophet 6 sounds like a plugin version of the OB-6, if you know what I mean.

The OB-6 is my favorite OB synth of all time. I just bought a Moog One and a Moog Matriarch this year. So it's going to be a fun time bringing an OB-6 home in a few months and looking at my wife's face :)

6 years on - What do you think about getting the new Oberheim TEO-5 and the Prophet 6? Is that the perfect combo?

Thank you for your research! Although you are really trying to be objective as much as possible, to me seems you like the OB6 better! :) Both great synths! To me, sub bass sounds more powerful on OB, on the other side I like more resonant filter on the Prophet. When you dialed a few sounds, overall Prophet sounds more balanced, but OB seems to offer much more possibilities :) Hard decission to make :)

Although the oberheim is beautiful, I really like how tight/stiff the prophet 6 sounds. Makes it fit beautifully in a mix. That distortion is perfect as well. A lot of synths didn't usually sound good with it.

P6 sounds more modern
