I already own an older version of the Ridgerunner from 2018. This is the newer 2019+ version, which I received a couple of months ago. I opted for the double layer nylon version, which weighs a little more than the single layer, but allows you to insert a rigid foam sleeping pad between the layers in place of an under quilt for bottom insulation on summer nights.
The main differences I saw with the newer version are A) the poles are attached to the suspension through loops in the Amsteel line, which replaces the older aluminum corner brackets, which saves some weight, and B) Warbonnet added internal loop rings inside the mesh for users to add an optional false ridgeline for hanging items like storage bags or hang time hooks. This used to be a DIY or custom mod which is now standard on this version.
The double layer hammock with strap suspension, carabiners, and bugnet retails for $250 on the Warbonnet website. Single layer or net free options without suspensions will cost less, starting at $130 on up.
The weight capacity of the double layer version is rated at 250 lbs/113.4 kg.
The weight of a double layered version in 30D fabric is 20.25 oz / 574g.
The weight of a double layered version in 40D fabric is 24.6 oz / 697g.
The weight of the spreader bars is 12 oz / 340g.
Additional weight specs for various configurations and fabrics can be found on their website.
This hammock weighs more than the traditional gathered end hammocks, but it offers some better sleep options for those wanting a good flat lay without calf ridge, side sleepers, rollers, or for belly sleepers.
Storage nooks can be found at the head and foot end of the hammock, as well as the large saddlebags on each side of the head end of the hammock. There are also straps at the foot end to tie up the bugnet if you wish to zip it out of the way.
Insulation: With the double layer option, you can insert a Thermarest rigid foam pad in between the layers to insulate your back for temperatures down to about 50-60F (10-15C). For colder weather, a down under quilt is recommended. Since the bridge hammock suspension differs from the traditional gathered end configuration, you can purchase a specially adapted under quilt or modify your own to accommodate four independent corner shock cords and carabiners for attaching the corners of the quilt to the four corners of the hammock.
When using with tarps, be sure to keep sufficient distance from the hammock, as the unit may sway more than a traditional hammock when entering and exiting the hammock. Since the pole ends stick out, be careful not to mount tarps too close, to minimize risks of poking a hole in your tarp.
Overall, the Ridgerunner, and a similar hammock (the Banyan from Dutchware) offer a comfortable night’s sleep for backpackers and campers alike, with just a slight weight penalty compared to gathered end hammocks. For side sleepers and those who roll around in the night, this might be a good option to explore for a good night’s sleep in the woods.
