Windows 10 / 8 Breaks Your USB MIC!?! Quiet Microphone Problems

Windows 10 (and 8) have a bug that severely limits your USB microphone volume by over half compared to Windows 7. This amounts to significantly lower recording volume and less control even with mic boost. The bug is tied to the generic USB microphone drivers and has existed for year. I discuss what Windows 8 & 10 do to your mic and a couple of solutions.
There's no planned fix. We're all doomed. This video is mainly informative to identify the issue so you can work around it.
Maybe buy an XLR mic and deal with Phantom Power issues? You could also roll back to Windows 7. There are alternative options like using windows 7 drivers or alternate sound control devices, but they're is no official Microsoft workaround to restore USB microphone levels (and volume) to Windows 7 levels.

You can try updating your drivers, but that doesn't work for many people.
