LGR - Lemmings - DOS PC Game Review

I was addicted to this game as a teenager. I even downloaded the DOS level editor Lemedit, made my own levels and shared them on the forums. Good nerdy times!

So disappointed that the current version of lemmings available has been ‘modernised’ , eg buy more skill buy more lives. I miss the days when you bought a game and could play it through from start to finish without needing a subscription, mystery egg, jewels or coins and an advert between every level and menu screen.

Not bad, but I prefer 2 player Worms.

I remember playing this game with my dad back in the day. The nostalgia is strong with this one.

How can this video have a single dislike

The only level I had trouble with was nearly the last mayhem puzzle with only one minute to beat it.

The Amiga version is one of the games I grew up with. Never managed to get very far with it.

This is one of the first games I remember my older brothers playing. We only had the original DOS version. They had a notebook full of codes for almost every level all the way through mayhem! To this day I just play a piece of the soundtrack and they just about fall over from the wave of nostalgia lol

I've played just about every version of lemmings that came out for the Amiga, including all the special versions that normally came out each Christmas. The original took me 3 days to complete on all difficulties and I had to fake an illness to skip school by sucking a bottle onto my cheek and creating a bruise then pretending I'd had a bad fall. Amazingly my parents fall for it :D Never relied on any guide either, because back then there was no internet for anyone outside of a research lab.

I loved this game when I was a kid. It's awesome! I need to find a download for it.

I played for hours on the Super Nintendo when I was a kid. Never even seen a computer back then. Thought that was the first until years later.

I had a diferent version called The Humans, it was so bad...

I imagine a scene from the White House where the Generals come in along with a man in a white lab coat carrying a briefcase cuffed to his wrist. They have the President set up a personal password for the nuclear football and 'FARTFACE' is chosen.

I never saw a review for this game at the time that gave it a score of under 98% (at least not for a computer, I can't imagine what it's like to play on a console with a D pad)

I finished all the levels without a strategy guide in the Windows version. But of course it was sometimes quite difficult, I remember that I spent hour solving one level. But in this case I think a strategy guide wouldn't have helped much, the main problem in this level was that there where many lemmings and you had to click on the right one to finish it (especially not on one walking in the wrong direction). But of course there where also levels where I tried a strategy severakl times just to find out that it can't possibly work because it was too slow or I would loose to many lemmings.

The windows 10 port was given away for free 6 months back and it's crap, swapped music tracks and "updated" graphics that look shite

I remember renting this for the Genesis multiple times. I played it so much my Dad took away the controller at one point. Only game that ever happened with. Good times.

As child i always saw Alf in the game... The one special exit...

Notable ones: Sega Genesis version of Lemmings, Sega Master System, Amiga. My first time playing it is three levels... Just Dig, Only Floaters can Survive this, and Tailor Made for Blockers.

Most of the Tricky and mayhem levels were crap. They did not challenge you to find a creative solution, they just enforced 100% perfect timing and ridiciolus apm. The 80 equivalent of grinding....

This game took over my life back in 91.

I love and hate this game.

I loved lemmings. Some of the levels really made you think. I wanted to play my original on my acorn archimedes 3010(green fkeys). I want to know if it was ported onto the acorn. There were quite a lot of differences that I haven’t seen on other versions.
The lemmings would say ‘let’s go’ at the beginning of the level.
The lemming would scream ‘oh no’ when exploding.
The lemming would scream as the drown (quite horrific really lol).
The animation from the intro was missing it just went straight to the title screen.
I’m sure that it had 100 lemmings instead of the 50 on some levels.
There was sound on the icons at the bottom of the screen. You could play it like a keyboard from A to G. It looked alot better than other versions in my opinion. The abandonware version I have played online seems to be 16bit and the only version I can play. The 3010 was 32bit, I would say the music Is alot different, even the shadow of the beast levels. Level 22.

I DJ in the bar attached to the small two-floor office in which Lemmings was made! It’s now a Mexican-inspired restaurant, but it has a plaque on the wall dedicated to Lemmings and the history of the building.

I also seen you were playing this on an NCR machine… Dundee software on Dundee hardware - love it!!

Taxing 13 has a huge flaw, the miner doesn't mine correctly and you have to either hit this pixel perfect stuff or do some bash and dig so they can get up. That level was SO frustrating to get past. I played every other port, only the DOS version has this issue.

Note on the Lemmings Myth:
It emerged from Canada & Scandinavia. Though some species of lemmings will leave the group after a population density line is crossed, even crossing perilous conditions to do it, observers in both regions noticing the decreased numbers started the rumor of them committing mass suicide.

When White Wilderness was being filmed, they were (ironically) aiming to dispel the myth of mass suicide and clarify it was just migration. However, to add "drama" to the scene, they pushed the lemmings off the cliff to their deaths, the crew not even certain if they were actively aiding the migration or not. Despite their original intention, their action (along w/ the narration selling this as a mania/sudden irrational compulsion) not only reinforced the myth but made it considerably more widespread than before.
