You can use format /q (for quick) if you don’t want to wait for a long format. The only difference is that it doesn’t overwrite the free space with Zeros, something you’d want to avoid doing on an SSD anyway

Er...is your CPU fan mounted properly? I always thought they were supposed to be parallel with the board's orientation...

LGR managed to run MS-DOS on a Ryzen.
Kugee managed to run Windows 98 on a Ryzen.
And Microsoft says that you can't run Windows 7 on it.

i never had problems making work the sound in DosBox, i ran Primal Rage, MK II, Jazz Jack Rabbit and DOOM 2, maybe you missed some configs.

Tried running Windows 7 pro on my 13 gen Intl i7 machine, it was a disaster trying to dual boot Windows 11 and 7 (re-install of Windows 11 needed). Even in a VM it is pretty useless as many drivers are unavailable for the modern hardware and Windows 7 is only 13 years old. DOS 6.22 is going on 42 years old. Interesting experiments though.

Man has it really been 5 years?… I remember theme the Ryzen was the hot new thing… wow a lot has changed in just 5 years alone. When it comes to tech, 5 years feels like 5 decades.

I was curious, and tried this on a 10 year-old laptop, because I have some junk lying around I bought from the company I worked for, and I was trying to find a way to get some use for it. I installed FreeDOS, and some games, and surprisingly they worked flawlessly. Even Duke Nukem 3D worked fine on VESA graphics mode too. Maybe if I can get some Sound Blaster emulation working, I will have the most overpowered DOS gaming PC with a Core i7 and GeForce GT 430.

FreeDos is pretty cool.

Is Ms dos (Microsoft(R) Windows 98) available in internet and run on windows 10?

Yesterday I tried downloading Quake for DOSbox but downloaded the old windows version (95/98) on accident and now I can just double click it. Legacy support at it’s finest!

I’m impressed that there was no extended memory errors.

Also using the onboard graphics bypasses the incorrect colours and also weirdly changes the font used in dos.

I remember something called 4dos with coloured folders etc

hardware emulations better off real things already. Fluidsynth and MT32 emulation on some of these sounds better than real hardware if you just know how to configure in detail. "OPL emulation never matches real hardware", well that's not a big deal, most of games I played own GM MIDIs and OPL emulations on these sound adequately nice and clean so far by now. Voodoo emulation on SVN optional can even force resolutions. Most of them supports GL shaders, some even does D3D shaders, yet are good with Reshade.

I never had a love for CRT pixelated footage. Of course, they're much sharper than when displayed on flat panels. But with scalers and shaders the detail retrievals are the winner. This is from my own experience of playing DOS games in 3 decades, not an imagination of the youngsters who think every ones loved game footage on CRT panels.

It's absolutely insane to me that you can run Duke3D natively on a fucking Ryzen.

a lot of my games simply don't work. most sierra games claim packed file is corrupt (a lot of sierra games). dreaded mega man included. not sure what's up with that.. :(

must transfer system from a: to c: with sys command to boot from c: (on cmd use > sys a: c:) On begining you just have instal MS-DOS programs application. (files)

A good Finnish indie game - among others - called Minebombers stopped working when pascal became impossible to run with pentium CPUs. I wonder if it works with Ryzen chips?

You should have tried quake for DOS. I ran it on my 3950x and it's ridiculously fast. timedemo is hilarious, it's a split second.

that motherboard could if it has a USB 3.1 port output audio through USB alternate mode which means it could detect the PC beeper as a USB alternate mode device as USB support PC beeper I think over USB alternate mode or usb analogue accessory mode which means it supports analogue audio port over USB which is what I think it's doing I think the USB 3.1 port is tricking the computer in thinking it is a PC beeper using that same mode that I just said above I might be wrong though please can someone tell me if I'm wrong sorry for asking

I love this. Just because something has no practical use doesn't mean it's not worth learning about. We gotta accept the fact that doing things for the sake of doing things is ok, especially when it makes you happy.

It looks like DOS all the time, even before you install DOS. If it wasn't DOS to begin with, what was it? Now I'm really curious.

If only for playing DOS Games, I rather move on to DOSBOX.

LOL! I'm trying the same thing on a dell Wyse R90LW. designed for WXP, I tried everything to get dos on the system, and NOTHING WORKED! Crazy! How does one get Win ME back on a system....

The DOS no boot issue may be due to running FDISK from Windows 98. FreeDOS and Wndows 98 use LBA disk access; MS-DOS doesn't. If the boot sector geometry is wrong; everything seems to work, but the system will not boot.

I wonder if your drive didn't boot because your computer might be searching for an EFI partition.

Eh, I don't think it's pointless. It's enjoyable to relive our earlier computer experiences. I for one would like to either get a late 90s workstation to run Win NT / DOS so I can install 3D Studio R4. Why? Why not? I'd like to take old 3D apps and see how far I could push them today with what I now know.

Plus, these machines can still do work. They can make MS docs, illustrations, you can do desktop publishing, etc.

Of course, none of this is as slick as it is today, but it can still be done. I'm currently using an old Rev A iMac to create some 2D animated computer screens from the original Star Trek series.
