People do this all over the country.

"Where are you from?"
Houston when they mean Spring.
Phoenix when they mean Chandler.
Detroit when they mean Auburn Hills.
New York when they mean Newark.

It's a generalization to offset the inevitable "oh really, where is that!?" You just name the bigger city nearby.
