Baron Albert La Symbolique Review:
Composed of 100% pinot meunier, this blanc de noirs brut nature is a veritable tribute to the Vallée de la Marne region. Its zero dosage will reveal its pure flavours of red fruits and yeast.
[2:57] Robe & Perlage:
A crystal clear golden hue host refined perlage that dance with lively zeal towards the top of the glass. A satisfying string of pearls rise from the centre leaving a wide distribution of mousse on the surface to reveal its aromas.
[5:55] Nose & Bouquet:
An intense blast of vivid forest fruits are immediately detected upon the first nose. Cassis, raspberry and blackberries fill the nostrils followed by hints of ripe peach.
The 2nd nose reveals a complex note of freshly-baked pastry, which pairs with the peaches to create a fruit tart accord. A mineral hint of limestone lingers faintly on the surface.
[7:30] Palate & Mouthfeel:
Although a brut nature, La Symbolique isn't overly dry yet preserves the fruity purity from the bouquet. A yeasty velvet of complex notes wash across the palate with a medium-to-long finish.
Tasting opens with rich cherry notes with bitter grapefruit and tart raspberry. Peaches soon follow in the flavour's heart, which reveal apricot and elderflower notes.
Shortbread pastry emerges while evoking the bouquet's fruit tart accord whilst the palate draws in for an earthy limestone finish.
[9:45] Overall Experience:
Baron Albert's joyous and modern geometric design is a break away from typical Champagne convention. Its stylish label fits in across all occasions and is suitable with casual social gatherings as well as high-brow weddings.
The plaque adds a fascinating elements and removing the foil reveals the portrait of a mysterious woman with a late 19th-century style.
The Mytik cork is a common choice among smaller-family run businesses. Regaining its shape within minutes, it's clear that this Champagne has been corked recently and aged mostly on lees.
Finally, the value for money is impressive but hard to find. It's currently not exported out of France. However, it can be bought directly from Baron Albert at only 25€ ($30) a bottle.
[13:15] Pairings:
Being a fry yet overtly fruity champagne, it features a rich character that would pair well with many dishes. La Symbolique would be an excellent choice with starters such as antipasto, caviar, foie gras or oysters.
For the main course, you could consider it with most seafood dishes as well as grilled white meat. It is also an excellent accompaniment with cheeses and would be delightful with a characterful Brie de Meaux.
You could easily consider La Symbolique with most apéritifs as well as light tobacco or mild cigars.
Finally, La Symbolique is best served at 10°C (50°F) to reveal its character. Any cooler and it may lose some of its complexity.
[16:46] Conclusion:
Being a new cuvée just released by a family-run Champagne houses, La Symbolique is special. This is one to look out for if it ever gets exported to your country. If you're ever in the Champagne neighbourhood, a visit to Baron Albert's estate is highly recommended.
