Connecting Philippines like never before!
Under the dynamic leadership of President Rodrigo Duterte, the government of the Philippines has spearheaded fast paced infrastructure development through various flagship programmes and initiatives across the country.

So will the Philippines join the infrastructure boom in Asia Pacific region? Why is the Philippines investing so much in multi billion infrastructure plan?

In the last decade, the Philippines has increased spending on highways, bridges, air and sea ports, and other large-scale projects. These Public infrastructure investments have resulted in an increased from 3% of GDP on average between 2011 and 2016 to over 6% in 2021. These multi billion projects are mainly focusing on transportation, water resources, and energy sector to overcome key bottlenecks. When completed, these projects are expected to have a significant impact on the Philippine economy and everyday lives of the Filipino people.

For instance, better transportation will assist farmers in getting their products to market easily and increase rural income. Improvements in the quality of infrastructure services in general will also lower the cost of doing business, which will attract more investments and boost productivity across the country and overseas.

Is Philippines investing too much in infrastructure development?

There has already been a major increase in private investment in the Philippines, which is expected to keep rising over time as a result of better economic growth, thanks to the recent infrastructure push and ongoing economic policy reform efforts. For example, the government is developing a second Manila airport with the help of Philippine giant San Miguel Corporation which made a $15 billion deal with the government to construct the airport in Bulacan province, 30 minutes north of the capital city of Manila. The international airport being built by the private company is capable of handling up to 200 million people per year.

Furthermore, investments in education and health care is greatly assisting students, the sick, and the old. Upgrades to public information technology, such as e-invoicing and digital national identification cards, is also helping to increase efficiency and transparency, which would also help in eliminating corruption. The Philippines is also increasingly investing in the fight against climate change and natural disasters as the country is one of the world's most vulnerable against typhoons, landslides, earthquakes, floods, droughts, and volcanic eruptions.

Meanwhile, The Philippines is on its way to becoming the fastest growing economy in Southeast Asia in 2022 as it continues to gradually recover from the global pandemic-induced recession, Malaysian financial giant Maybank said.

Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, The Philippines — the booming countries of the world economy.

ASEAN is world’s 5th largest economy. I think ASEAN countries together, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Vietnam are moving in the right direction to achieve normalcy post-Covid, ie VTL, high vaccination rates. This will be sustained key driver for stocks as seen in 1Q. Equities should be in favour, and tend to perform well after rate tightening cycle begins. Financial stocks have historically outperformed. Yield Inversion or not, stock markets could be back-stronger!
