Why SHEIN is a brand I will never recommend: Fast Fashion at its worst ǀ Justine Leconte

Idk if I'm one of the few men that bought from shein. I saw them and was like these really aren't too bad, plus it's different. Every thing I got was about 11, 15, 22, or something like that. I thought the price was okay for the style. Obviously, I had no idea about it. Shein, and all. All I saw was some nice clothes for cheap. I guess for a summer, if anything.
Also, the more deep I get into this, I mostly see the womens clothes getting the most attention about shrinking or everything you've mentioned. For men, I did wash and dry (once) and saw really no change. I planned on wearing them for I guess a month or two. I bought a lot, again I flat out didn't know. What now? Throw them out, sell them, donate?

I am going to stop shopping at Shein. However, I do want to point out that I am just barely scraping by right now, and I genuinely struggle to afford any clothes. I do not purchase new clothes on a "weekly" or even monthly basis; I do it maybe a couple times a year, with the sole exception of when I need something for a specific occasion (which does happen as I'm a performer, but doesn't happen too often as I purchase things with an eye to versatility). I struggle to keep myself housed, I struggle to keep myself clothed, I struggle to keep myself fed, and I am far from the poorest out there. You talk about ten years ago. I can't speak for people in Europe and the UK, but here in the US, ten years ago, you used to be able to stretch a dollar much further. Groceries cost nearly double what they used to; I look at rents in my area and wonder how anyone affords to live without roommates (I have several). People who say it's "all they can afford" may be speaking the 100% truth. I know I will struggle to replace the items in my wardrobe that came from Shein.

Justine talks like she has been to visit all of Shein's suppliers in China! By picking up a couple of pieces from the hundreds of thousands of Shein to hammer in on 100% negative OPINIONS is so typical of very bias and nasty comments hidden behind strange agendas. The fast fashion brands from Europe and America are producing in 3rd world countries and China too. Worse of all their designs and quality over the years have gone down hill with prices going up and up. Many of us have bought from Shein and todate their shipments are reliable, measurements are accurate and quality is good for their price. Don't expect haute couture quality when you pay for decent fashion like Shein. We will continue to support Shein for as long as they keep the quality and prices in balance. Plus they have the most user-friendly websites. No wonder they out-sell other brands. These days, it does not matter where the brands produce their products so long as they are value for money.

Sadly the people who I share this with still justify that they love the fast fashion and will continue to shop there for trendy pieces. Then they look at me in horror when I tell them I pay so much for one cashmere sweater or silk blouse which they say is equal to their whole order of junk. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am not only just against Shein for the mentioned reasons, I am also against online ordering of clothes in general. One must try out clothes to know whether they will fit and how they will look on them. Many times I would see a garment that I think will look great, and when I try it, it doesn't. Sometimes I would try out something thinking it won't look good and it turns out fabulous. I was a fast fashion girl in my twenties, but as you get older you learn that fabrics and quality over all matters.

I accidentally ended up bombarded by shein when I was looking for +size clothes . . .
(At the time they didn't make +size clothes)
They DON'T have photo shoots:
I realized their photos are grabbed directly from the designer sites from which they steal their "fashions" The photos are chopped to remove identifiers such as faces & watermarks.
I figured the ONLY WAY they "create" so many clothes & styles is by direct theft from the artists & designers. As example, an artists upcycled shirt jacket that was fully dimensional on the artist site, was no more than printed fabric (think spoonflower) on the shein site but used her picture from her site.
I think they install web crawlers to scrape the sites of popular Google searches for niche fashion design/ers

Shein begged me to be an affiliate/influencer for them and they are the complete opposite of what I value for fashion. They just couldn't comprehend that I prefer better made clothing that's produced in a more ethical environment with safer textiles and dyes and I will gladly pay for it. They just kept pushing how cheap they are. And I tried telling them that's not appealing to me. They sent me clothes without me saying yes and they all were strange cuts and unflattering for me. The material was horrible.

Going thru an endless charade of reasons when your only reason is that it is a Chinese Company! If it was American, you would have sung endless praises.

It's designed that way to make it "cheaper" by looking the other way from contractors and not caring about human rights of the environment. It's even illegal in China.

Thank you for informing us, i regret buying alot from shein, I deleted the app today and I will go through my clothes and remove what i purchased from them.

I must admit, I too checked out Shein but deleted the app after I noticed the big butts and boobs. A good source for well made clothes are the second hand stores like Unique. Yes, you have to have some patience but it is certainly worth the time.

I love Shein.

I really don't understand in a worldwide climate crisis that they can still illegal fabricate everyday.... They pollute the world and discrease the price of ethical fabricants. I write sometimes on Instagram bad comments on them and then every day they STALK me and my followers ! Criminals

One doesn't simply recommend a brand that sells clothes that has 10 to 20 times of lead in them same with phtalanes.

They're also lying when they say they don't use fur. Some people did receive items that were supposed to be faux fur but contained real fur.

I don't have anything but GOOD to say about Shein.
I've been buying from them for almost 2 years now and I have not had hardly anything that I didn't like and the quality was really good.
I always look at the reviews like crazy before I purchase with people actually wearing the product.
They have made clothing that are knockoffs from free people and the quality is great. Plus I'm not paying over $100 for one item.
The jewelry have all been real stone jewelry that I have bought thus far, and anything that I get that's rhinestones are usually crystals. Very pretty... I have no complaints.
You just got to do your research.

Economies are getting worse and its no surprise many people want cheap stuff. For Shein, its a hit-or-miss when you order clothes from them. Just don't order plastic, pvc kinda clothes, bags etc and shop for only what you need. But many people buy more than whats usually needed as they can get much more stuff at a cheaper pricing. Mulesing is horrendous, i never purchase anything made from a live animal and never will. Thanks for the information, Justine.

Even in the early days, I couldn't buy from Shein. The over-edited images were a big red flag for something with a low price point.

Given the major success of Shein despite the poor quality, what are Shein's alternatives that ship worldwide and have a huge selection of practical but better quality pieces that we all need?!

I don't want to shop at Shein but we can't deny that it is a game changer that we desperately need. Many of its designs are beautiful, practical, and work for almost all body types, not to mention the convenience and time saving for those of us who don't like to go shopping.
