I feel like Pilate really didn’t want to crucify him. In Pilate’s account of Jesus to Caesar, he stated how he liked how he wasn’t overthrowing the power of Rome and he could tell he was a very wise man. Moreover, I think him washing his hands shows his innocence in the matter - despite what he did.

Pilate's washing himself of the situation is understandable, most men would bend or break under such circumstances.

Pilate's sin, however, is that he had the chance to do right by an innocent man, and chose to let a mob prevail over the righteous.

It is always good to do your duty, and is understantable to temper principles with practicality, but one should not forget to be human.

The lesson I took from this story is, do not stand idly by and watch someone innocent suffer at the hands of injustice...or you are just as guilty as those that do evil work.
