On the 23rd of October, 2002, Chechen militants stormed Moscow's crowded Dubrovka Theatre during a performance of a new Russian romantic musical, Nord Ost. They took 912 hostages and demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces from Chechnya. The siege lasted three days until Russian security services pumped sleeping gas into the hall, stormed it and killed all 40 attackers. At least 130 hostages also died - most not at the hands of the attackers, but because of the effects of the gas. The events were documented in a series of paintings by the British artist, John Keane. They are featured in the new exhibition, "Fifty Seven Hours in the House of Culture," running from June until November at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews, Scotland. He's been speaking to Dan Damon.
