Having a third, fourth, fifth party is only part of a solution. Its very difficult to get the requisite electoral votes if more than two parties are running. This election cycle with RFK running independent, it is very likely that none will get the 270 needed. This sends it back to the political hacks to decide. Do we want our partisan politicans deciding the presidency? I think not! It's all a vicious cycle.

About a year ago I thought my teeth were growing. I felt my teeth, they upper teeth. They had grown on the top side of my teeth. I remember running my finger over my teeth & could understand it. I started to try to think of what do babbons teeth look like, does the top teeth protrude out or have to ends or ridges on one tooth. I don't know but after a little passing of time I woke up that physical change in my body had returned almost back to normal teeth. I had some kind of calcium deposits in my gums, I dug them out.

A 3rd party is a good idea, it might be a good balance in the act of governance but before you can govern, you have to be elected and that's the main problem. During election, it might weaken/dilute one candidate and allow another to be elected "by accident" which is a great danger. Refer to Nader, and Perot, it's the greatest hurdle for #3 party.

Americans should really give Forward a chance. You couldn't do worse.

I agree with Andrew's proposal to create new political parties, the risk is what happens in my country of origin resentful leaders, people who seek economic position, etc etc are going to want to create a political party... there should be adequate laws for create a political party.

I think a key to alleviating the polarization is to stop calling either side by these catch phrases. I have mostly voted Democrat my entire life but if there is a reasonable human (third option); with a real chance to win, more than any time in my voting history I WILL vote for that person. I am not a conservative hating democrat but I recognize the harm that Trump or Trump like candidate can cause.

Filibuster discussion and the polarization description. Filibuster to me is good, it slows down legislation. James 2:10.

The polarization description can be visualized as a tree of good and evil or an apple bodied man, neither is good or healthy and a lot of work which we were warned about in Genesis. President Biden's description is all the same to me, "We're building a foundation that goes out at the middle class and up." Body builders with bird legs have been the laughing stock for how long.

Thanks for the conversation. 100% agree that the US needs a multi-party system and ranked choice voting. Overturn Citizens United too. But please, no more false parallels between this bizarre version of the current Republican Party and the current Democratic Party. For all its problems (and there are many!), the Democratic Party is not doing nor proposing anything particularly radical. Their positions on things like healthcare, social safety nets, civil rights, gun control, etc. are considered basic in most western democracies, regardless of party. You well know that the current version of the Republican Party has lost its damn mind and is advocating extreme positions and actively supporting dangerous behaviors, groups, and outright lies (“the big steal”, Jan. 6, insurrection, bold racism, voter suppression, etc. Need I go on?). To call that out is not “partisan”. I’m old enough to remember when Democrats and Republicans actually offered thoughtful, though different, policy positions within the range of reasonable debate. That is most definitely not what’s happening now. Jeez, the fact the majority of Republicans are still hiding, denying, lying, etc. about Jan. 6 and the election - even when their own lives were being threatened - tells us how sick this has become. So yeah, unfair demonizing of “the other side” is not cool. But understating the very real threats to democracy in front of us and playing it off as a false equivalency and a “both sides” thing is simply inaccurate and ahistorical. (even a casual study of authoritarian regimes and fascism will make what we are facing quite clear). To compare something like some Dems jumping all over language (a problem and an annoyance, yes) to Repubs supporting The Big Lie, violent insurrection, and anti-civil rights policies is disingenuous at best. (I say all this as a lifelong educator and activist who’s been pushing for a multi-party system for decades and as an American now living in Europe.) ☮️
