I worked in Swaziland, Africa as a volunteer. I lived in the bush, in the low veld where there were plenty of snakes - black mambas, green mambas and large pythons. On one occasion I was invited into a mud rondaval in the middle of the day. Because it was so bright outside the minute I walked inside the hut I could see nothing. the person I was with told me to hold out my forearms. I did and immediately he laid the mid-part of the body of a very big python. It was more that a foot in diameter and the portion I was holding had to weigh more than 50 Kgs. The skin felt buttery soft. Gradually my eyes adjusted to the darkness and I looked to my right and saw that the head of the snake was tied to a metal bed frame with a piece of wire. That upset me because I viewed that as cruelty to this snake thought I knew that I shouldn't say anything because the people who had caught it would kill it for it's meat and sell the skin of the snake. But I did think about paying them $20 US to buy the snake and then I would have carried it down the road and release it in the bush. I know a crazy idea but for some reason I did think the snake would wrap around me and squeeze me to death.

During the two years I lived in Swaziland I learned of a 15 year old boy who had been looking after a herd of cattle eating the spring grass. He lay down in the shade under a tree and a python bit his head which paralyzed the boy and then proceeded to swallow the boy whole. The boy was found by his family when they went to look for him and the herd of cattle when they expected him to return for supper.
