Horrible movie. Too long and boring. Tom Cruise should've stopped making these pointless Mission movies a long time ago. It's all about stunts with no logic behind it. Rogue Nation was the last good movie in the franchise.

Sorry, this movie was straight up bad. Don't read the rest of my comment if you don't want plot spoilers! A nearly three hour movie that is packed with flashback scenes and exposition for the few that hadn't seen the previous movie? Who do they think would be spending their money on this one? What a huge disservice to the fans. The movie also tried way too hard to force connections to make this mission sentimental. It seemed like everyone was suddenly related to somebody from a previous Mission Impossible movie or actually was from a previous MI movie. Speaking of forced connnections, we have a flashback showing a previous Mission Impossible that was about a biohazard, but is now actually the code that created this movies AI. Huh? Also, many other things made no sense. Luther's life is in danger, but the fastest way to get there is running halfway across the city? We get it, Ethan Hunt likes to run, but this was just silly. Also, Gabriel suddenly has nukes because of plot convenience (never explained), and nobody was ever around to stop him from acquiring them because suddenly all that matters is the scary AI? There literally has been whole Mission Impossible movies based on nukes not getting into the wrong hands. Sigh. As I mentioned, there are a ton of flashbacks in this newest Mission Impossible movie. We even get to see how some Russian submariners die in a flashback just because Ethan looks at their bodies. Why would anyone care how these two plot unimportant people died? It comes off as very confusing because it almost seems like Ethan is remembering the event. A first year film student would have known better than to set the scene up this way. Another part of the flashbacks are Inuit people chiseling through the sea ice to grab keys off of dead bodies that are under the ice. First of all, the previous movie showed these keys hanging down on necklaces (because gravity), which means that the keys wouldn't be conveniently facing up under a few inches of ice. Secondly, we are supposed to believe that the Inuit are not the least bit freaked out about dead bodies under the ice and are only concerned with the attached trinkets that they see? Let's not mention that the bodies under the ice would likely also indicate where the AI submarine is, but nobody realizes this? Going back to Luthor, let's also not dwell on the fact that as soon as Luther dies, they find a different black man to be on the team for the rest of the movie even though he has nothing to do with the IMF (got to maintain that diversity). The ending has a prolonged airplane duel (don't even ask why there just happens to be an extra plane for Ethan), which makes no sense because Gabriel has to have the source code device that is with Ethan and has already admitted that he needs Ethan alive. Yet Gabriel now tries repeatedly to knock Ethan out of the sky to kill him. Then, instead of a potentially amazing fight over one parachute as they free fall, we get Gabriel dying in a throwaway scene and Ethan finding another parachute. WHAT? I thought that the previous Mission Impossible had the most spectacular train wreck that I have ever witnessed, but this movie is an even bigger train wreck. What a waste. There are many, many more things I could list that were just flat-out stupid or nonsensical (cabin instantly going up in flames, Grace snuggling with Ethan in an active decompression chamber and much more), but I think you get my point. Instead of going out with a bang, this Mission Impossible became Mission Implausible.

I just saw this movie and LOVED it. I LOVED how they brought so many of the characters and situations from the earlier movies. I LOVED the action scenes, after all that is why we love Tom Cruise movies, for the AWESOME action scenes, married to the inner circle of the teams humanity. What it ALWAYS comes down to is those few people who are willing to act while others sit on their arses. All conflicts have one or two individuals that do extraordinary things in the face of unsurmountable odds. In this one it is Ethan. Dave, I disagree with you almost entirely on this one. It was a fun wild ride, that had a good story, was a great tying together of the strings of earlier MI stories, had a great cast and wonderful twists and turns. The ONLY thing I was disappointed with was the absolute last moment, of course that left us wondering... is this REALLY the last MI movie?

I agree with you 100% on the pre-Internet world. It would cause a lot of suicidal disruptions but many of my older friends and I who’ve lived through all of this are in agreement. It could potentially be better for humanity certainly for everyone’s mental health and personal connections.

Cons: Lousy non-compelling supporting cast, lousy villain, lousy love interest, 1 hour of flashbacks and plot explanations. Pros: 1 hour 15 minutes of great suspense, action and stunts. The insanely beat-to-death threat of all the worlds nuclear weapons being deployed ruined this movie. This same plot is in at least 1,000 other movies and 6-7 James Bond movies. Was this the best "threat" that Cruise could come up with? Lame. WHY couldn't this movie have been edited down to 90 - 100 minutes? Cruise is a narcissist - he needs to hand this off to someone who will bring FUN back to Mission Impossible.

Didn't like the character of Grace.
Why was Luther dying all of a sudden? Did I miss something?
What was Gabriel grinning about?
Are nuclear weapons just available on eBay now?
We never got any more of the story of how Gabriel framed Ethan for murder.
The son of Phelps thing was weird.
Those are the main bad points for me.

Better points.
I found the Techie from the first film being at the Alaskan research station pretty funny.
Also funny during the fight with the 'cult member' on the sub Ethan telling the guy that 'he spends too much time on the Internet'
Some great stunts, particularly the plane chase.
Good scenes on the sub, but I was just thinking of various Bond films ('For Your Eyes Only', Tomorrow Never Dies', 'World Is Not Enough'!

Also, as Dave noted, Nuclear Armageddon vs ending T'Internet. Despite problems, switching off the Net would be infinitely preferable to the former! It would be like returning back to 1992. Result! Also, aren't weapon systems like nukes not connected to the internet? Bloody hope so! Moreover, you could just unplug them, as was done for the US ones!

So, 'The Entity' was supposed to be created in 2012, when a Russian 'digital stealth' system got jiggy with a CIA implanted intel system. Seems a bit early for A.I taking over the world, even allowing for government's being way ahead of the game! Also, how did it 'get off the boat'!?

I thought with so many flashbacks, we were going to have a flashback in a flashback. It was frustrating and messy. I didn’t hate the film. It seems like it needs to go back in the oven at 1hr 49mins.

As a newbie, having only seen 1 and 2, the exposition did help alot with playing catchup for the other series I missed. Undoubtedly, if you watched all the others beforehand, then you'd be pretty pissed putting up with all the filler stodge in between.

My theory is twofold:
As it was marketed as the final instalment, or movie, (depending how you interpret it) and simply changed it to Final Reckoning (without the "Part 2"); that and the exposition was most very likely to wider cater to the newer audience, whilst fan servicing the followers with retcons.

The other theory is that because of so many screen rewrites, delays (keep blaming COVID) and so forth ultimately in a rush to meet the deadlines (May 22/23, 1996 throwback!?), they got lazy and just shoehorned as much exposition dumps as possible to pad things out.

Furthermore it appears due to the rewrites, I take a number of scenes were cut - ie the polar bear/s, which would explain the rather extended dialogue between Grace and the Inuit. Often the removal of one scene, necessitates the trimming or deletion of another. Why the latter wasn't removed in this instance baffles me?

For me I was fairly starry eyed after seeing it - we got early releases here in Australia by a week; so was very lucky I avoided all the spoiler reviews etc, not to mention limiting myself to just the teaser trailer only. However given time, I can see where the downfalls lie, whilst still appreciating the positives as well.

It might not be the most solid out of the franchise, but it sure isn't the worst. Overall I'd give it a 7/10.

Totally agree the story was so slow and the stakes didn't seem real. No idea why they kept introducing people to kiss Ethan's booty.

Why didn't they have a proper mission impossible ending? Give us a Trump type president and they need to take his image to get the launch codes to blow up the entity.

I was kinda in shock like half way through the film I was thinking am I in a test screening and they haven't cut it together yet.

In part 1 the ai took Benjis voice and in this one all it does is beam some lights. The AI would have killed Gabriel instantly and I thought the chase in the dungeon was gonna be the ai taking him out but then you'd have no bad guy.

The whole Jim was my dad was so bad and made no sense. So your telling me they went up to his son a) told him btw your dad works in the imf b) offered him a job c) I thought it's jail or imf. I was almost laughing when they explained it.

The server room admin guy from the 1st movie, wtf wrote this...

This movie had lots of problems, at least the end (not the end end) was great and even with its problems it was still miles ahead of other movies and a great mission impossible one. After all the action in the plane they couldve taken a little more time to tell what happened with each character and give Ethan a better finale, maybe with a girl or going to live somewhere, it looked like it was preparing for another movie.
