It could have been if corporations like Lockheed Skunks and Boeing and many others released unacknowledged technology to the public. Dr Steven Greer managed to go to Washington and even David Grusch, for serious hearings (with witness protection and everything). History would have been completely different.

We cant't trust in the production cars today sometimes you are driving your car on the road and suddenly your car doens't work because of bad functuion engine, image if you are flying with your car in the sky and if you detect a problem like this, you will fall in the sky.

My predictions for 2074: The U.S. will split into two or three regional republics. Climate change will worsen and lead to mass migration from countries most impacted by our warming world to the U.S. and Europe. This will create armed conflicts at border crossings. China will attempt to invade Taiwan. Medical technology will greatly improve. There will be ingestible probes that can map the interior of your body, most likely the stomach and intestines. Nanite technology will improve health by attacking viruses and bacteria in people with compromised immune systems. Baseball's popularity will greatly decrease. Almost all shopping will be done online, and brick-and-mortar stores will cease to exist. The world will see its first trillionaire, and some people will live to the age of 135.

Most of the 50s retro futurism is possible today but the entire effort-benefit ratio was superseded by the digital world of the internet. Whilst these were surprisingly logical depictions, the main reason we don't have these advancements is more because of their impracticality rather than possibility. Flying cars are a definite possibility ever since the first helicopters. However, do you really want loud cars flying everywhere? Also passenger safety is always a concern. What if the car fails or hits a bird or a building? The casualties would be much more severe even for the people on the ground below you. Large dome structures are also possible, but completely superseded by today's standards. You don't always want a sunroof overhead. Besides, domes made of this much glass are far too brittle for the temperature expansions, and would cost a fortune to maintain. Not to mention risk boiling you alive like a pressure cooker in the hot summer days if the ventilation ever malfunctions. Rocket mail is again far too dangerous. Rockets are mainly used as missiles to hurt people not for transport. While you can design SpaceX type rockets that can descend safely, the landing site would still be a hazard and most of the components would need regular swapping and maintenance. But even if they keep everything in top shape inexpensively, I wouldn't want to be near a landing site.

50s RETRO futurism would be futurism that was retro to the 50s.
What you're thinking of is 50s futurism.
It's 'retro' to US, NOW, but it's still futurism to an extent.

Now that I am older and don't get around as well as I used to, I do nearly all my shopping on line via Walmart or Amazon. Amazon has fast and free delivery. Walmart is local and often cheaper on some items. After I make the order, I just go there and they just load into my car so that prediction is pretty accurate.

Monorails didnt get buried because of the actions of their competitors, they got buried because monorails are inherently annoying compared to more traditional light rail - for example, switching often required moving the whole beam the car was on to perform the switch.

Now if you were talking about light rail, el trains, trams etc more generically? Then yeah competitors and poor government decisions have a lot to answer for.

I grew up in the 1950s and '60s. I remember all of this and had high hopes for the 21st century. Too bad it was stolen from us by populist propaganda, right wing conspiracy theories and wannabe dictators. Here we are in 2024 and nobody can agree on FACTS. We are facing the possibility that this will be the last election in our nation. Vote or you can't complain when it comes crashing down.

Even in the early 1970s the vision of the future was different to how it turned out, I still have some of the books of the time. For example, by 1985 it was believed there would be people on Mars, we're still talking about it today. Also what ever happened to the moon base of the late 1970s, and the large rotating space stations? Cars with anti collision radar systems by the 1980s was another forecast as was hypersonic airliners. One thing that has come true though later than forecast concerned combine harvesters and agricultural vehicles going around farm fields robotically needing no drivers, and that is the case in the farms around where I live in the UK now. Another thing from the early 1970s was the prediction that every home would have a computer linked to a network and people would use it to look up recipes for meals, and that has come true.

It’s fascinating to see that the self-driving cars were driving on the dashed lines, not between them. I think the artists were assuming those lines would be used to control the position of the car on the highway, i.e. to match the center of the car with the line

Monorails have a very serious problem. Should something go wrong with one of them, the passengers cannot get out and walk the track. They are helpless until the service trucks arrive. Now, imagine a monorail that catches on fire. Huge numbers of casualties, right?
