Daisy Gilardini is a Swiss photographer who currently lives in Vancouver. She’s been an active photographer since 1989, and her work has been featured in National Geographic and BBC Wildlife. Since 2018, Gilardini has been a photographer in residence for Canadian Geographic, where she specializes in polar regions.

The three techniques that set her apart are her background use, ability to let nature speak for itself, and use of movement in her photos. Her backgrounds either create stark contrast or seamless blends into the foreground, helping set descriptive scenes. That paired with her tendency to capture naturally-occurring color schemes leave her photos needing little editing. Finally, Gilardini uses animals in motion to create movement throughout her images, forcing viewer’s to explore the entirety of her photographs. This movement often leads viewers to discover the ethically evaluative meaning of her work.

Gilardini has given me a new appreciation for intentional background selection that I hope to replicate. Additionally, I have started to notice how photographers move their viewers’ eyes throughout the frame. I hope to take this movement to my own work.
