My mother-in-law apologized to me once for having made meat loaf spread out in a 9 x 13 pan instead of shaped into a loaf.... I had the hardest time convincing her that I'd never had meat loaf in a loaf! My dad was the meat loaf maker in my family, and he always made it in a 9 x 13 pan. with just ketchup on top.
