Hi Gaosheng - this would have been more useful if you did an apples to apples comparison with your old house to what you can get in the Bay Area. Also you could go into the state taxes/ gas ( if you need to drive to work). I think 30k is on the light side of things to move there with the same standard of living. As a comparison I am doing a similar calculation from going from philly to nyc area. Based on housing and taxes I found a 50k increase. I also think Bay Area is more expensive than Jersey.

Here's a better rule : If you are warehousing your kids to Day Care, your life is a mess. Move. Never dump your children to strangers all day.

Bay Area is expensive but your children will have a lot of culture with the museums, plays etc. Portland has a lot of crime just like in a lot of places in America now. You look at all the really violent crime it’s not all California. A lot of crime in Dallas, 5 police officers killed in one day. Georgia, Colorado; 10 people killed in shooting massacre. If you buy a house here it’s going to be worth more. Only Covid push business and California Ian to other states. Those states are nothing without California money. The infrastructure is still here.

Lions are only here because it's the only place which hires animals without engineering degrees. Any other place expects you to have an ivy league engineering degree just to program hello world so the salary difference is infinity.

I accepted an offer in Bay area because of the money. It's true that they pay your really well in Cali, especially if you are an engineer. But again, I'm not sure what my future looks like. I used to think Scilicon Valley would be an ideal place to live, it has the best engineers in the world who I really enjoyed working with, but at the same time it has a lot of problems in the surrounding areas. The drug, the gun, the violence, you know it's one thing to watch the news but to see them corner boys packing heat with your own eyes, it scared the shit outta me. And to think kids have to grow up in this environment? I don't know man, it breaks my heart.

But maybe this is just me, it's the first time I came to US so maybe I'll get used to it
