Home Server Setup - Turn your old PC into a useful home server

What do I want to use it for? I hate that even even you spend money on streaming services they still serve you ads as if you are one of those other normal adults who likes the torture incest drama genre. My purchasing decisions no longer matter, probably never did, so back to piracy it is!

This seems like a lot to put up just a server.....i mean....what's the purpose of the server? If you just wanted something for files you could just take windows whatever and setup file sharing and be done with it for the most part. If you want a game server there are simpler ways of doing it. This just seems like a lot of work for something like a gaming server and i've ran tons of them with a lot simpler tactics than this. no disrespect to the video maker but this seems like too much for too little at the end.

i gived proxmox a try, its kinda limiting the resources, i spend 3 days researching how to passthrough my gpu to plex and i managed to do that, spend another week trying to make my 10g network card work for fast file transfer and ingest, the card shows but not working made a virtual lan from it and the performance was terrible i was getting something like 300mb/s to bad, went back to windows server 2022 and everything works much better nativ

What's the performance difference between RAID0 and RAID10? I'm currently running two 1TB SSDs RAID0, but I'm thinking about switching to RAID10 for obvious reasons. I just don't want to cut my PCs response time in half. It's an older custom build using an Intel 3770K if it matters. Thanks.

I got totally confused after we installed Portainer as this wasn't setup to use Nextcloud right? Plus you mentioned Windows Docker wasn't the best, but Portainer is still running using Windows Docker is it not? I closed Windows Docker but then (as I suspected) the Nextcloud and Portainer containers weren't available. Feel like I'm missing something here. First half of video was great, second half I'm left feeling confused.

Edit: I tried running docker start container from Powershell which worked, but only if Docker Desktop was running. I am SO confused. I thought Portainer was instead of Docker desktop. (I'm in Windows 10 Pro)

Yeah, why not. Another computer in the house consuming energy 24 hour per day. Looking at the type of computer you have there it will consume a lot of energy. Any idea what that costs? Bad idea.

Just one small correction... if you sell your kidneys, they remove them through your lower back, if they went through the front they'd have to get through the abdominal muscles, past the stomach, intestines liver and colon. It could involve a lot of poop. From the back there's basically just skin, fat and kidneys.

what videos can i watch to get to the part where the setup is complete and i can access the server from my new build?

For the windows 10 option is it possible to run it headless? I read RDP is not safe for this purpose but don't fully understand why.

As a electrician I have a 100 or 200 Digital Video Recorder with terabytes 50 to 200 of memory for close circuit Tv system sitting in my garage The camera system used tons of storage. The commercials customer just want bigger memory and compact size DVR recorders and don’t want the old DVR recorders. These companies want petabytes memory or bigger they have plenty of money to spend and say keep the old stuff I remove
For DVR camera system now.
Can I used them to start a servers room I have don’t know how to program a computer.

my proxmox dissapeared from the router and I was never able to get it online again, reinstalled the whole proxmox and I was never able to connect. I have been working my whole life with computers and servers so I really wanted to fix this but even if I was in control of the router, all devices and settings and so on I never was able to connect or see proxmox on the network again so i eventually gave up. did a lot of research and just came to the conclusion that proxmox is unstable and shit. Now i am looking for other alternatives, will never thouch or recommend proxmox ever again

Wow.....but my old PC has only 256mb of ram....and 8 GB Ram is in my current pc.....so according to you my current pc is old....then does that mean my old PC is your vintage pc??😅

Just got a message from Microsoft about getting a new PC. Machine is working they are looking to make my machine fail. I want to have a hub or gateway for automated devices. Lights fans and stuff like that. I will get a new (refurbished) machine. I would 2 drives 1 Windows 1Linux.

Does this solution allow my server to be accessible behind a router that is configured only for allowing outgoing internet access?

I downloaded Docker and am trying to get Nextcloud. I'm assuming that I need to run the line - $ docker run -d -p 8080:80 nextcloud - in my powershell. It just gives me an error "command not found exception" & "missing expression after operator". (I also tried running powershell as admin) I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. Please help. Thank you so much! Yesterday I was ready to throw my old PC out the window. Every How To article and video I tried to follow seemed to end in glitches, and trying to find fixes got even more complicated. None of them used Docker, which made everything very easy. All I wanted to do was share files and test a few things on a web server. 🎉
