I bought two of this router (actually its older iteration RT-AC1900P) about a year ago when I switched from Spectrum to Verizon Fios gigabit. Luckily, I got this for cheap and I struck gold when I found out ASUS rolled out AiMesh feature to this already old router, I get (almost) a full gigabit internet speed and get a automatically managed mesh network in my home although I did run an ethernet wire for backhaul, which technically makes it an access point but I don't have to tweak the settings every now and then and devices handoff seamlessly. I am very impressed by the level of support ASUS gave this product throughout its lifetime after reading numerous reviews that were already 4+ years old when I bought the routers. ASUS still surprises me to this day with new features every time there is a firmware update. Best purchase ever.
ОтветитьI bought my parents one 4 years ago. One year ago one the WAN port failed (I think due to lightning nearby) so I used failover to switch it to another port. About 2 weeks ago, it finally packed-up completely. The 2.4ghz light went out and it broadcasts wirelessly on 5g and 2.4g but will not actually allow anything to connect. It still works through the cable but what good is that. Considering it offered the failover and carried on for another year on half it's guts, I can't really complain.
Ответитьhi, nice vid! ^^ is it possible to have both dual-WAN (load balancing) and Ai-Protection running simultaneously?
Ответитьi heard that there a prob with the 2.4hz not working did they fix that in 2020 i rallywant to get a asus router like this one but i need to know if the 2.4hz is ok
ОтветитьGood Stuff, thanks.
Couple of questions on the 68u.
I have using the router for 4 plus years. Its superb, but some issues
1. After heavy data thruput about 20Gb
a. Wifi speeds begin to fall, especially intra network
b. Parially unresponsive-dns, mobile appp
Soft reboots dont fix the issue.
Power off reboots restore full capability
Any fix or tips, as it is almost a daily occurrence.
Nightly automatic reboot is on
I just bought one at the goodwill for 7.00 hopefully it works
ОтветитьCan help i have same router but im using adsl connection
Ответитьcan i use it without a modem??
Ответитьdo you know why i suddenly started getting high ping, download is the same as before.
ОтветитьGreat video! Planning to buy one now but wanted to know if this router has bandwidth control for wireless? Thanks
ОтветитьLoll gotta love the Persian accent 👍🏼
ОтветитьThe first thing you will notice about this router is its *weight*. It's very heavy for a consumer router and the Netgear equivalent feels flimsy by comparison. (and it is.)
So I broke into mine, basically taking it completely apart, to check it out. There is a 158mm x 60mm aluminum heatsink covering both the RAM and the processor! But even with that removed, the heft of this unit is still substantial.
The only thing slightly-questionable are the blue thermal pads between the RAM/processor chips and their light aluminum covers and the covers and the heatsink. These are 2mm thick and I would have preferred a tighter fit and actual thermal compound, so I have some 2mm-thick copper shims on order with which to replace the thermal pads.
And there is a 4-pin, clearly-labeled serial header, in plain sight (once you get inside) in the event that you soft-brick it in the process of a firmware upgrade. The VCC pin delivers 3vDC, and so might be used to power a small fan (e.g., a laptop CPU fan) inside the case; there's about 10mm clearance between the heatsink and the inside of the case, enough for a thin fan.
Getting in to the case is a bit of a chore, but there's a vg video on doing just that.
The T-Mobile TM-AC1900 ("Personal Cellspot") is a rebranded RT-AC68U (it even says "RT-AC68U" on the mainboard) and can often be had for $30 or less. Recent versions of its firmware make it difficult to install a 3rd-party replacement such as DD-WRT, so you have to trick it into downgrading to a previous firmware version before the upgrade. This is tedious and not recommended for the beginner, but again, there are clear instructions and even videos for this. I'm currently running the Asus-Merlin firmware and its sweet.
Hi
Berfor,
Nice video
i have just bought a asus rt-53 wireless router with the intention of using it to access a vpn service like nordvpn.I would like to know if i have to setup the router a router, access point or a bridge to make this work?
I currently have a fibre internet connection.
Any notes or guide would be gratefully appreciated
Thanks
The Asus RT-AC68 is a great example of how consumer electronic devices should be designed and manufactured in an ideal world. Released in mid-2014, it remains an excellent value for money router that would serve the needs of an average sized home in 2020 (though admittedly, it is now starting to show its age). On some level, it is unbelievable that it is still on the market 6 years on for ~£120; and I bought mine in 2014 for £100! 6yrs is a looooooong time in the consumer electronics industry and for a device to still remain relevant with strong sales says a lot.
This is all down to its excellent design, build quality and high performance components - a standout package that raised the bar for wireless networking choices in 2014. Combine that with Asus continuing to release firmware updates regularly and adding truly useful features along the way (like AiMesh), one can understand why choosing this router is a no-brainer.
It probably also led to Asus gaining a strong, loyal fan-base when it comes to wi-fi routers - me being one obviously. Due to the great user experience with the RT-AC86U, I have subsequently purchased a RT-86U and most recently, the ZenWiFi XT8 mesh package. Asus deserves its success when it comes to wireless networking devices. No other rival manufacturer provides such exceptional long term support. Long may their approach and success continue.
Can i disconnect the built in receiver anntena and connect a 4g lte outdoor antenna for boosting the input signal gain ? did you try it? Can you rcommend for ASUS 4G LTE router (with one or dual sim card slot) ?
Ответитьfor me, i cannot even get power on it......... wtf just bought it. and i am 99% sure it does not need modem to get power on it??? since we dont have wired internet anymore... they pulled that off when they put all other cables into ground......
ОтветитьThis is a great router but I added a fan on the back.
ОтветитьHello asus rt-ac66u nordvpn will not change ip address
ОтветитьWould you say the Asus AC1900 Dual Band Gigabit WiFi Router(RT-AC1900P) is comparable to this? It's $159 right now.
Ответитьtaaaankyo
ОтветитьI will by RT-AC68U. Will you please tell which MODEM your using and any other MODEMS suitable for this Router.....
Ответить2.4 ghz dies a lot - huge problem with this router
ОтветитьI know this review is 3 years old and I don't have anywhere near the need you have but I'm going to replace my Netgear N750 (8 years?) with either the Asus RT-AX56U or the ASUS RT-AC68U. I don't need the wifi 6, and I've read many of negative reports on the 2.4 MHz band performance on the 56U. The 56U is listed with quad core processor and simultaneously 2 dedicated upload and download per band. The 68U doesn't mention this, can it do this? This is probably a very important feature for me. Anyone? Your reviews are great, thanks. At this time the 2 routers I mentioned are about $120 in 2021.
ОтветитьWould this router be good for a 71m2 (800ft) apartment where basically every wall is concrete? I have 100/100 and in my living room that is 2 concrete walls and a fireplace from my router i get like 5mbps right now with a technicolor tg799vac that came included with my internet
ОтветитьIs it worth to. Buy now?
ОтветитьI have this router but I get very bad ping in games with it
Ответитьis this router overkill if my isp only provides 18mbps? 😅 at&t is trash where i live...
ОтветитьI've got this router from T-Mobile and it being working strong for many years. Just recently I was getting weaker signal and transmission rate was sluggest while standing in my backyard or even in the kitchen and was about to purchase a newer router but decided to try something before the upgrade. By changing the 2.4ghz channel to only N mode and 5ghz to AC only as the result is WOW..... the signal now is up by 2 bars on my phone and the transmission rate are now blazing fast so I have no need to upgrade and saved $300.
ОтветитьHello can you tell me about Bandwidth control dose it work ? Dose it have advanced QOS ? Please help
ОтветитьGreat video! I have the following question... Would you still buy this router in 2021 or something else? I'm on the market for a solution that will work in my 4000sqf, 2-story house.
ОтветитьCan we bypass the 30 mbps cap when using Huawei 3g/4g dongle ?my iphone makes 150 with same sim card so its not network issue
ОтветитьToo bad there are no good open source drivers for Broadcom because they make very good chipsets and thus be able to have OpenWrt in them...
ОтветитьDo you need the same router to turn one of the routers into a wireless bridge or can you have two different ones?
Ответить6 years & still going strong! One of the best tech purchases I've ever made. This router still trades blows with top level ac routers coming out today. Kudos to ASUS & the community for the excellent ongoing support on this hardware. 👌🏽
ОтветитьBest router i had...7 years and going strong as ever and the best thing about it is that unlike most other manufacturers out there, who stop supporting their devices in few years to push you into buying a newer model, Asus keeps updating it's firmware even after 8 years...
ОтветитьHey @behfor what modem would you recommend for the rt ac68u?
Cheaper the better ideally.
Alternatively is it possible to use my EE smart hub as a modem?
I own 1 of this. It's great as you said and it's still in use
ОтветитьMy land ports are not powering up my blink cameras , are they burn out , need help please
ОтветитьGreat content, but aweful annoying "laser sound" for transitions, and terrible music and sound effects.
ОтветитьThank you for your helpful video. Can you tell me if it will work with my Android phone using the phone's 4g USB tethering option ?
ОтветитьI'm using this router for more than three years. I'm using OpenVPN server daily. It's so simple and good working! I have it connected to my ISP modem/router. It kicks ass! :)
Thank you for your videos, they helped me to configure my router trough all these years. After 3 years i deicided i'll use DDNS for remote control. And it's working like a charm! :)
Thanks!
ОтветитьI have the RT-1750 B1 and RT-AC66U B1. They are both the same unit with the RT-AC66U having wall mounting holes on the case. I assumed the RT-AC68U was the same as the other two, but based on your video it has the following changes:
- it stands upright and not flat.
- it has a WIFI on/off button (which can be handy)
- it has a "LED OFF" button to turn off all of the LEDs. (A feature I wish my cable modem had.)
- faster CPU ??
In a follow-up video, you should talk about the buttons on the unit. Some units only have power and WPS button, while others have additional buttons which I feel slip under the radar for most people but are still handy.
I own the Asus 4G-AC68U and in most ways they are the same. My router has two 4G antennas and 2 WiFi antennas plus only one USB 3.0 port. It takes ages to boot and connect to 4G but otherwise it is excellent and very similar to the RT-AC68U. There is only one downside and that's with DDNS. With 4G, I can't use DDNS because mobile providers keep their public IP address behind a NAT. They issue a secondary IP address. I have not found a way to get around this, even with a VPN. 🤷🏼♂️
ОтветитьI wish you explain how to transfer iptv signal via wireless routers
ОтветитьI have the RT-AC68P it has worked great since 09-2015 it is starting to slow down a bit when streaming - I would like to buy a new one and try the AiMesh feature. Would you recommend any other Asus model as good as this one that works with AiMesh?
ОтветитьI bought mine mid-2014 and paid a mint for it but wanted to future proof my network. Here I am 9 years later still using it. I of course use custom merlin firmware, which I started using in 2021 and it brought an entirely new life to it. I consistently have 20 devices connected an no issues. I can actually say it's a better router today than it was in 2014, for many reasons.
ОтветитьI Updated my Ac86u and after updating my 5g band disappear randomly when there is no device connected to it. Is there any solution or my router is ruined and useless now?
Ответитьman yeki az ina hkaridam az Fry's electronics. back when they were still open. all i can say that it's an amazing router and it still works like day one (after almost 10 years).
thanks for your great videos. keep up the good work.
still used this one till yesterday
