In a new initiative to enhance urban greenery and local biodiversity, Tauranga City Council held its first ever Free Tree Day on Sunday, 9 June at Mercury Bay Park.
The event offered 1900 free native trees to Tauranga residents to help increase tree canopy coverage throughout the city. Some of the native tree species residents could choose from included Pōhutukawa, Tōtara, and Tītoki.
More than 1000 people collected a tree to plant on their property, and our Sustainability, Arborist, and Environment teams were on hand giving people tips on caring for their new tree and talking about other environmental initiatives we’re up to.
