I’ve found it. Part of the terraforming technology package that landed here over 200 years ago.
I had heard there was some of the old tech still around. This is the front end or “command secretion” of a fusion atmospheric processor. What they used to call a ‘shake and bake’ reactor that broke down the atmosphere into its component elements as plasma the. Release the gasses you wanted and the rest into solid compounds for industrial uses.
You hear the stories of those pioneers from the early days and the rough time they had but to see this really brings it home.

It bothers me that the design is impractical 😆. The machine would have to lean so hard on every step to prevent falling. Cas the feet are not underneath, way far out.

Vehicles with legs and not wheels, is becoming a reality. Sci-fi stories prepare us for the future.

I would really love to see the process of making this.

The soldier walked around the old mech warily. Other than the wires in the back, it seemed like it was still in one relative piece. The lowlands were easy enough to get around, but most of the world was steep hills and uneven, rocky terrain. Transport mechs like this helped get construction workers to different areas where wheeled and track wouldn't work and flying vehicles would struggle with the high winds. After the war and near abandonment of the region, it was strange to see something so intact just left behind. More odd, it was playing very soothing music that could put one at ease, which is how he had found it in the first place.

The soldier would have to check for booby traps, but if it was clean, it could act as shelter for the night. Or spirits willing, it might still work, making it easier to travel the terrain without being so exposed. Perhaps luck was finally shining on the lone soldier, wandering the misty highlands.
