Do i remember a scishow tangents episode where Ceri was saying the same happened for the word “blood?”
ОтветитьWait, is sinister derived from the latin word for left?
ОтветитьA similar phenomenon is noticeable in the Hungarian language, whith right being "jobb" which literally translates to "better" and left translating to "bal" which is part of words like misfortune and accident (respcetively translating to "balszerencse" and "baleset")
ОтветитьBut I've always preferred left :(
ОтветитьAs a euskara speaker I always noticed that Ezkerra sounded rather a lot like Izquierda, but I always assumed we had borrowed the word from the Romance languages and not viceversa. This feels really cool to learn
ОтветитьOh so thats why the white wingers call us the left.
ОтветитьAnd people act like believing in superstitious stuff isn't extremely toxic behavior
ОтветитьThis might happen again
ОтветитьIn Spanish we do still use the word “siniestra” meaning left tho we do so infrequently. “Diestra y siniestra” means right and left. It’s not widely used, tho.
Ответитьthe fact the chart shows words for left on the right pisses me off
ОтветитьFun fact: sinistra in portuguese is the female adjective that stands fot sinister (just like in English).
ОтветитьIsn’t this what happened with the original name for “bear”? I read that people became convinced that calling it by its name would summon it so they started calling it other things and the original name was lost in time.
ОтветитьTrue, but in Spanish when we want to say that something is done without limit, we say: "a diestro y siniestro" which means "both right and left"
Ответитьand, a guy just told everyone that happened. they didn't believe it. then they found out it was true. and, he did that in a context of proving too them that they needed to repent the entire universe of language studies. and, here we are today they still haven't.
Ответитьmost of the words on the table for right come from directam
Ответитьspanish has siniestro, but don't use it for left much often
ОтветитьThe Hungarian word for "right" litterally means "better".
ОтветитьAs soon as I saw that the left words were on the right side and the right words were on the left side my brain went bananas
ОтветитьI found this confusing as im left handed. Then i remember like 90% of people are right anded lol
Ответитьthey were not wrong that the left is evil
ОтветитьThis is why my life sucks. What do you mean I’m cursed by the devil because I’m left-handed? I’m cursed by you to have to bastardise objects in order to use them comfortablely, and smudge ink/graphite all over my hand whenever I write. Bad luck indeed.
ОтветитьIS THAT WHERE THE EXPRESSION "diestra y siniestra" COMES FROM
ОтветитьThe political spectrum suddenly makes a lot more sense
ОтветитьNo wonder everybody looked at me weird when i'd only buy left twix
ОтветитьYes, in spanish the word "siniestra" means evil but its original meaning still exists in the phrase "a diestra y siniestra"
ОтветитьEven Latin had another word for left, ‘laevus’
ОтветитьThere is a political comment to be made here somewhere...
ОтветитьThis is also why all roman roads only ever turn right. Jk
ОтветитьIs winistraz how we got widdershins?
Ответитьleft is the bears of body description words
ОтветитьBrazo izquierda del diablo
Ответитьleftys rise
ОтветитьSeems like a Christian thing
Ответить"DESTRA" e "SINISTRA" também se usa no português bem falado...
ОтветитьI feel attacked as my right eye is much weaker, I kick with and place my left leg first when walking, and I write mostly with my left (I can do a bit with the right)!
ОтветитьNobody likes the Left 😂
ОтветитьItalian is by far the most beautiful neo-Latin language. French is the ugliest.
ОтветитьDo people understand why we should stop listening to our ancestors yet? The fact that they got rid of a word cause it’s scared them is ridiculous
ОтветитьJust one note, in spanish, we also say diestro for a right handed person and siniestro for the left hand
Ответитьdidnt we do that with the word "bear" as well?
ОтветитьI have a feeling this comes from people thinking left handed people were evil
Ответитьdexter and sinister
ОтветитьLeft = Evil 🤔 that checks out
ОтветитьHuh, so that’s where the word “sinister” comes from? Very interesting, I’m a lefty too.
I’ve also heard that in Arab (or specifically in Islamic?) culture it is considered disrespectful to give someone or to receive an object from someone with your left hand… Is this true?
Lips smaller that polari flohr
ОтветитьHispanik actitidades
ОтветитьWater Splash without Katara is Nordique O’spagnol
ОтветитьAs a left handed person I am so lucky to be born in germany in the late 20th century.
Ответитьin Ancient Far East Asia, Left = East , Right = West, Front = South, Back = North. And under Prime Minister, there were Left Minister and Right Minister. Guess which one was higher ranking? the Left minister. However, right also meant correct too. but Left did not mean wrong.
Ответитьthe only ones that stand out are french and portuguese.
