in Ancient Far East Asia, Left = East , Right = West, Front = South, Back = North. And under Prime Minister, there were Left Minister and Right Minister. Guess which one was higher ranking? the Left minister. However, right also meant correct too. but Left did not mean wrong.

Huh, so that’s where the word “sinister” comes from? Very interesting, I’m a lefty too.

I’ve also heard that in Arab (or specifically in Islamic?) culture it is considered disrespectful to give someone or to receive an object from someone with your left hand… Is this true?

Just one note, in spanish, we also say diestro for a right handed person and siniestro for the left hand

Yes, in spanish the word "siniestra" means evil but its original meaning still exists in the phrase "a diestra y siniestra"

This is why my life sucks. What do you mean I’m cursed by the devil because I’m left-handed? I’m cursed by you to have to bastardise objects in order to use them comfortablely, and smudge ink/graphite all over my hand whenever I write. Bad luck indeed.

Isn’t this what happened with the original name for “bear”? I read that people became convinced that calling it by its name would summon it so they started calling it other things and the original name was lost in time.

In Spanish we do still use the word “siniestra” meaning left tho we do so infrequently. “Diestra y siniestra” means right and left. It’s not widely used, tho.

As a euskara speaker I always noticed that Ezkerra sounded rather a lot like Izquierda, but I always assumed we had borrowed the word from the Romance languages and not viceversa. This feels really cool to learn

A similar phenomenon is noticeable in the Hungarian language, whith right being "jobb" which literally translates to "better" and left translating to "bal" which is part of words like misfortune and accident (respcetively translating to "balszerencse" and "baleset")
