The tank is an M4A2 built at Fisher car Body. It is a U.S, Marine tank.

This particular tank at Red Beach 2 was called Colorado.

Gentle reminder, there was a war going on at the time. The Gilbertese left everything as it was as a reminder what the Marines did in liberating them from the Japanese. (I lived on Betio in 1984-85.)

I didnt think there would be too many Japanese tanks on the beach. lol

That's an American Sherman medium tank, not a Japanese tank.   But your video is admirable nevertheless.   Thank you.

My great Uncle was killed on Betio in WWII. He was MIA for 74 years until his remains were accounted for this past month. Thanks for the footage.

That was an American tank. M4A2, fell into a shell hole and the crew bailed out of it.

TARAWA was industrialized murder. Combined w supreme stupidity @ JCS. The result created carnage bordering beyond the limits of absurdity. An unsubstantiated disproportionality in terms pain vs. gain : all this 4 a piss-poor airstrip which lost its strategic significance in weeks - 1100 KIA, 2300 WIA in 76 hrs + the rest latent section 8 for the rest of their existencies. Even Howlin Mad declared the decision to grab it worthessly poor. However, he spake in hindsight. Nimitz denied the claim. The Peleliu decision + the price were even more horribly erraneous, 1 year apres. But Marines don t care - they just obey. The rest will always be history, or, nowadays - herstory ...
War is hell - peace is heller : some survive war, but none peace ...
