You can make chest rig from bandolier. You just need that rubber rope with hooks at the end

Thanks for this. I probably won't really use most of this info because, like you said, the subject is fairly personal but it's nice to see a different perspective on it.

There are plenty of times you say something that is much more casual than other training guys will put out and at first I always wonder if you have some watered down opinion but the more I think about it the more I realize that you’re talking in a context where that one specific event is not everyone’s lives. I appreciate that.

My go-to SHTF setup: Ultra low profile armor carrier (literally nothing but an armor pocket and elastic cummerbund) with a MOLLE vest and Condor LBE belt is how I run. Its a tiered setup. The vest holds 6 mags (308. 12 mags if running 5.56), IFAK, radio pouch, grenade pouches and a hydration bladder in the back. The Condor MOLLE belt has 6 more magazines, my ACOG pouch with a Steiner 5x prism backup optic (run a 3-12x44 scope as my primary optic), 2 canteen pouches with canteen + canteen cup and a buttpack with some easy access sustainment/living gear for when on the move. Poncho, camo net cloak, couple MREs, etc....
The real survival and shelter gear like my heavy duty tarp, sleep system, extra clothing, fire building and water purification equipment are all contained in a large ALICE pack.
Plus a bandolier of magazines and spare ammo on stripper clips in the pack.
Edit: A retort to the P Mag babdolier issue: Put the P Mags in the bandolier with alternating direction (69ing) and 2 will fit each pouch slot.

After years of courses and training involved speed reloads, reloads with retention, etc., I've come down to this:
-I practice one way to get the empty mag out, new mag in, ASAP. I don't bother about keeping empties, or retaining.
-I will probably have 5 mags, 4 and one in the well. I'm prepared to lose all 5.
-I have big stashes of mags at, and around, my place. I will go and get some more, if need be. I have no intention of roaming the wasteland engaging in firefights.
-As I've said here before, I am not going to "fight like a soldier". I believe that's a losing proposition.

What I've seen from Ukraine is 3+1 mags being very popular for raiding trenches and the like. From what I have heard, they usually also have more mags elsewhere but 3+1 is expected to enough for quick access.

Now, how much of that is logistics of a military + drones + fire support + reinforcements + everything else that comes with being in a military? I'm not sure. It may be that these attacks are intended to be the first dudes in, so they clear out what they can and make room for everyone else who has a heavier kit to finish sweeping the area. Since they are only expected to get a foothold, they aren't going to be fighting for fire superiority with suppressive fire, they are going to be shooting individual people who are responding to gunshots or who are unfortunate enough to not realize they are the ingress point. These are just guesses though.

I came to a random realization: "Prepared citizens" are just people LARPing. But that is the point. Humans, especially males, are biologically hardwired to have a need to practice combat/hunting tactics with a team, mostly because that is how humans and our ancestors survived for hundreds of thousands of years. That is the entire reason for stuff like sports. So, doing stuff like this may never come up, but it DOES have the practical effect of satisfying things our biology thinks we need to do, which makes us MUCH happier. While there are many other ways to do it, some people can't have too many levels of abstraction from the core need, so, they practice martial skills with a team.

Next step for Ass Facts: The team practices kiting a bear with spears and rocks to take it down and defend the tribe :D

There’s a time to retain mags, and a time to not bother. Ultimately, if you win, you’ll have all the time in the world to pick up your empties and otherwise resupply from former enemies. If you don’t win, who cares?

you will only ever have as many magazines as you are carrying on your person. whatever you left at home is useless to you. if we're talking SHTF, your home is nothing but a target. you should never return to it. the only way you're gonna get more mags is by taking them off a corpse. not exactly a reliable source. in any case, you should never be in a situation where you need to perform an emergency reload. that's only relevant in a room clearing environment, which is suicidal for any irregular to attempt in the first place.
