How to Get Students to Listen You, Without Actually Talking

My recalcitrance as a student stemmed from the lack of ability or desire of adults around me to explain why I should be doing something, beyond "because you have to."

Sometimes you just have a conversation where you treat them like adults, not direct them via half-assed semaphore.
