Doctor Deciphers Doctors' Handwriting | Medical Memes

One of my stepmom's good friends while I was growing up was a nurse, and she always said that everything in the charts (this was the '80's and '90's, so paper charts) were written in a bastardized type of medical shorthand that everyone learned and used just to avoid misunderstandings due to handwriting. I guess I've just always assumed since then that all medical professionals did this, not just her hospital. The more you know.

Here's an idea: instead of handwriting, use those rubber stamps with the wheels. Each stamp has notches cut into the foam of the letters and numbers in a unique way like a fingerprint in order to prevent fraud. The doctor keeps their stamp on a chain attached to their belt and places it in a lockbox when not on duty.

That's why i record the doctor voice in my appointments..anyway i never remember what the hell we talk about so is a good reminder.. sometimes i asked for a pencil and paper so i can write myself and they got mad.... like wtf... idiots are everywhere. And me as a biologist can't hate doctors more. Only 1 time in my life i met a good one.

I work in medical records. OD also means orthoptic daily.

Also handwriting is still terrible. I have to decide what a page is when I scan it in and sometimes there will only be two legible words on the page. The first name and the second name of the patient. We use printed labels for those...

One would think in a precise science like medicine...

Last time I was at vet (I'm vet tech student) he wrote the list of topics for me to write about and his cursive handwriting was pretty nice. That left me wondering if vets write better than docs.

I review medical records to find diagnoses that can be supported....and handwritten notes are rare thankfully. It's a terrible time trying to sort out handwritten acronyms and shorthand -__-

So here's my theory:

A) Should you read and write a lot, you learn to decipher information from less obvious writing (from an outsider's pov) - allowing you to prioritize speed over readability.

B) Doctors retain a level of interpretation by deliberate obfuscation in order to hide the possible misspellings and misnaming of items.

I always ask my Doctor friend to read my presciptions to me, and explain to me what they are. She even comments that my Doctor's handwriting is bad and hard to read. She even commented that my dog's Vet's handwriting is bad.

When I started work as a clinical coder in a UK general hospital in the 1990s we had to work just from Discharge Letters from Medical wards (the other specialities allegedly letting us have the notes as well) which were always hand-scrawled and frequently contained abbreviations unique to the Dr/dept concerned. Endoscopies were the great though; printed, different colours for gastro, colorectal and lap chole, and pretty pictures of all the bits.

When I hear this music I feel a strong urge to restock shelves...

I have never seen cursive Chinese letters until now. It's like some sort of crazy calligraphy with ballpoint pen.

I've heard people say they were taught to have intentionally bad handwriting to make it difficult to forge.
