The Civil War and American History should replace the lame-o Social Studies taught in grade and middle schools since liberal arts became popular. American history as a subject is much more interesting and much more likely to instill character in our kids at an earlier age. In my time, Am History was an honor class only available in high school and was written in a very dry, pedantic manner when in reality it is an amazing part of history with a never-ending cast of larger-than-life leaders.

Gettysburg has really embraced its past to propel it to the future. In Connecticut we have a number of "history" based festivals. None are film based but some examples are: New London has "The Burning of Benedict Arnold Festival" around the anniversary time of the Battle of Groton Heights and Burning of New London in 1781. Essex, CT has the "losers parade" featuring fife and drums on the anniversary of the British Attack on Essex in the War of 1812 and in Deep River, Ct. the largest fife and drum event the Deep River Ancient Muster takes places each July attracting dozens of fife and drum units from as far away as Canada and Switzerland.
