moved here for school and cant fuckin wait to graduate and leave. shit food, shit people, shit drivers, 5 different predatory law enforcement agencies operating in the same small town. More police than necessary for a major city let alone Marquette, no jobs available, housing crisis, etc. If you like to drive 5 miles an hour under the speed limit and eat the most bland food ever cooked move to Marquette Michigan, where the average citizen has "duhhhhhhhhhhhhh" playing in their head on repeat.

I was in a Club at K.I. when the air force base was open and one of the guys said "it's great to be back in civilization" to which I said "what are you talking about? They call this K.I. Siberia". To which he replied "I just pcs'ed here from Shemya. Do you know where that is?". I said no and then he told me it's on the Alluetians and the nearest city is 250 miles west which is Petropavlovsk Russia. Suddenly it didn't feel so remote here😂

Thanks for the videos.

I'm flirting with moving to MQT from Boston (I grew up an hour from DTW) but the healthcare is really the big downside for me. If it wasn't for that, I'd be there. It's not even really the lack of specialists, Lifepoint is just garbage. I wish that MQT would boot them, or at least have some kind of deal or shuttle service with Ann Arbor or Duluth, kind of like how Sudbury Ontario has affiliations and transportation with healthcare in Toronto. I know that it's not the same healthcare system, but I really think that healthcare is the real achilles heel that's holding MQT back. I mean, when you need care, you're not exactly in the position to want to drive for hours or even negotiate flying in and out of low service airports. On the flip side, I also weigh the fact that a house that would cost me $700K (cash) in Vermont (where I'm also looking) would cost $400-550K in MQT, so that excess money could buy me some first class transport if I ever needed it (I'm currently in amazing health, but the clock is ticking).

VT is VERY similar to MQT in any number of ways, economically and culturally. IMO, Vermont is Marquette, with mountains, and Harvard/MIT graduates who are vegan, wear flannel, prefer Carhartt, and like to snowshoe. (If you think that MQT is a small town, look at most towns in VT.)

Btw, summer is my least favorite season. It's great in MQT because it's short, and even at its peak, at night it tends to be cool and crisp. The hot and humid part is over before you know it.

MQT is stunningly beautiful. The people are amazing. People leave their doors unlocked. It's got a lot of hockey (I grew up in it). For some reason, Lake Superior wows me when the Atlantic ocean does absolutely nothing for me. There are just so many pros with MQT, and I think it's amazingly positioned for climate change (Vermont's real estate went through the roof after covid when rich people were shopping for an escape hatch for global warming and pandemics), but from what I see, it doesn't seem very interested in marketing itself for the future, preferring on relying on the status quo. In today's world, you're either growing or you're dying, and the best I've seen from MQT is marketing itself as a vacationland, which I guess is something, but it's not the kind of leadership that I'd hope for. Best Buy left basically saying that they didn't see a growing, vibrant future there, and I kind of agree with their take.

I still flirt with moving there, especially now given that I'm recently laid off at 54 (AI is coming for us all) and am consequently more urgent in my search, but am in excellent financial shape, so I'm looking for my retirement forever home. If you're looking for ideas for future videos, what I would LOVE to see is an investigation of what MQT thinks its future is and how it wants to get there, if it even concerns itself with such things. I tried calling city hall and the economic development group a few years back to get their take on it, and it was like I wasn't speaking English when I was asking them how they were positioning themselves for the future and bring in new people/businesses. Conversely, if you call city hall in SSM or Timmins-freaking-Ontario, they will tell you all about how they are trying to position themselves and attract residents. I would love to see more hustle on the part of MQT because, again, I really think the place is amazing and could really start reversing many of the pretty shockingly negative economic numbers.

Btw, what is your kickback rate from Main Street Pizza?

Thanks.

If we want Marquette to flourish, invest in higher education. Young people want to be around other young people. They will flock to Marquette if there are educational opportunities that are attactive. Consider the case of Berlin: After WWII, West Berlin was a ruined city, full of old people, surrounded by Communist East German. Nobody wanted to live there, certainly not young people. So the West German government created the Free University of Berlin. Not only was the university tuition- free, but the government included all kinds of incentives to entice young people to attend it: Subsidies for housing, transportation, etc. + exemption from the compulsory 2 year military/community service. Today Berlin is one of the hippest cities in the world, full of young people from all over, including lots of Americans and thousands of Israelis! To accomplish this will political will...Let's turn the Lake Superior Region from a rust belt into an education belt!

Jobs: It’s not just a lack of jobs, but the legacy of harsh work and low pay has led to a harsh culture around work, where many people just accept that work will be nasty instead of trying to make workplaces that are more positive.
Winter: I love summer here, and winter…what’s hard is the long months where it’s not either, it’s just unpleasant…35 or 40 degrees and drizzly.

I’d add my own: it’s that we’re accumulating urban problems like nasty drug addled bums panhandling, traffic, skyrocketing housing market, over policing of beaches and trails, pressure on popular recreation sites…
all these urban issues are arising, but you also don’t have urban benefits like pro sports teams and high end concerts and all the commercial choices and opportunities that come with a more populated area.
At times it seems like Marquette is losing the rural feel of the UP, but it’s also isn’t big enough to gain the benefits of city living.

just my $0.02 as a local.

I went to NMU and then worked in Marquette, Iron Mountain and Ironwood. I left to do some wandering. The weather, the location and the health care wasn't a concern. When my youngest son went to NMU, I still managed to go up from lower Michigan once a month to visit. After he left and went to Colorado I don't think my wife has been back up there. My older son and my grandson and I go up once a year for an NMU hockey game. We also have a forty in Sands Twp that I go up and check on in the summer. I've never considered driving to the U.P. a hardship, I still enjoy the drive.

I have never been to Marquette. I really can’t travel at this point in my life. But I’ve never liked where I live. I did research for the better part of a decade of places all around America that I may want to move to excluding where I already live. And Marquette has made it to my top 5. Some of the politics and laws in Michigan I am not much a fan of which is why it’s not my number one destination but I like it so much I think I’d be willing to put up with the politics I dislike. It’s just such a beautiful place. I ironically found it on google earth. I sometimes go on there and look at towns around the country. I was curious about Michigan’s upper peninsula and discovered it. I don’t hear anyone ever talk about Marquette. I feel like it is a hidden gem. Someday I would love to buy a large plot of land preferably on the lake. I hope it stays a hidden gem because right now land is relatively reasonable up there. But it won’t be if a bunch of people start flocking there so I’m sorry that people are leaving but this kinda makes me happy to hear as hopefully I can afford to move there someday! It’s truly one of the prettiest places I’ve seen in the US!

Ya, health care is terrible. I travel to Midland Michigan for my heart health issues. UP Health Care really dropped the ball on my heart issue. I heard the health care was bad in Marquette when I was considering moving back. I found our first had it as bad as I had heard. Most jobs up here are in the service industries. Stores, restaurants, hotels, etc. So, as an employee, money isn't great. There are some opportunities for entrepreneurs, I believe. But the outdoor opportunities are incredible. Hunting, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, atvs, biking, boating, hiking, foraging, and so on and so forth.

To raise a family up north does such a dis justice. these kids are at a disadvantage to being raised down below. Most have no idea what is available as far as jobs go. Most are raised on welfare or very low income so they grow up thinking that is normal. If anyone is thinking of raising a family up north in a small town think twice. I was raised up north and shocked when I moved away I got lucky.

What do you think about this statement given to me by a recently retired MQT police officer. He is opinion is that Maquette will "love it's self to death". I found it an interesting perspective from a city offical who has lived there from the lowest point in the mid 80's to present. His outlook was positive for visitors, but nuetral or negative for residents.

MQT is the nicest town in the U P but that is easy,go visit a place like Felch or Hermansville where everyone is a cousin.
