As others have stated Putin floated the idea and was rejected. If Russia joined NATO where would we find a convenient enemy who will not attack us but still can be made to look scary? China? Not likely. Too much U.S. money being made there.

I love the idea. Then article 5 would keep the peace between NATO countries. The aggressor would trigger a defense by all coming to the aid of the victim.

I believe I have a simple yet brilliant way to end the war in Ukraine that would ensure the sovereignty of both Ukraine and Russia: have them both join NATO simultaneously. All sanctions on Russia would be lifted. All POWs and political prisoners released.

In return Russia would withdraw from all Ukrainian territory including Crimea. Russia would still have their naval base in Sevastopol and access to NATO ports. It’s a win win.

To be fair if Russia joins Nato, Nato would lose its point because the main point of Nato is a alliance against russia but im not saying its impossible because if there is a country that is being hostile even for the russians, Nato would probably accept russia to their alliance temporarily or permanently
