Are your wigs medical grade? I’m assuming so, to protect the skin on your scalp. I also see you being able to style your wigs with heat and even put them in ponytails so I’m assuming they’re not synthetic. They better than my own hair! I know you’ve dealt with bullying and people asking you if you have cancer and possibly some idiots asking if you’re a skinhead. My brother got the same treatment when his hair fell out. It started falling out in patches when he was 15, and he was able to hide it for a while before I helped him shave it off. He kept his eyebrows by getting steroid shots in that area-about 1/2 a dozen shots above his eyes every few months until he finally couldn’t handle it anymore. My mother was able to get him on a 504(c) plan at his high school, allowing him to wear a ball cap to hide the fact that he had no hair on his head, no eyebrows, and no eyelashes. At that time, we lived in NH, and he wore long sleeves (we‘re talking about 1996, so wearing a flannel or hoodie with thumb holes cut out was the style) and long pants (which he continued after we moved to TX). Bc of a stupid substitute teacher who was required by law to read his 504(c) accommodation as well as any IEPs for the students in class, but didn’t, and told him he had to remove his hat. The brim of it helped hide his lack of eyebrows and eyelashes. He had the right to refuse the request and go to the principal who would have reprimanded the TEACHER. But he was very insecure and did what he was told. And then came the questions that I mentioned previously. But he did have a lot of support—his friends knew about the alopecia and when he went to parties, the girls would draw on his scalp with highlighters which would glow under the black light that every party had. At the same time, the lead singers from two very popular, very talented bands shaved their heads and eyebrows—Maynard James Keenan of TOOL (and the fact that he’s never had any hair since then except for wigs, never had any facial hair makes me wonder if he has alopecia—if so, I wish he’d share that but he’s a very private person) and Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins. My brother, as it turns out, wasn’t really into that kind of music (though he got me into it and I still am), but he needed to survive the hellhole high school is for someone who looks different because kids are mean.
My brother was very insecure about his looks even though my friends all thought he was good looking. He thought of himself as a freak. Eventually, he met a woman who challenged his belief about himself and he gave up his hat and wore shorts and short sleeves. He also joined the navy where he met many other people with alopecia. He’s always been an amazing guy and I wish he’d realized that sooner than he did.
