Elaine Stritch plays Mary, the widow. I haven't thought of this actress for at least 30 years.

Marius Goring is such a remarkable actor!! I always liked him. He's unforgettable... Even in small roles like in The Spy in Black

Did Roald Dahl literally just give the definition of Dark Humor in the beginning?

I didn't get it, bit of a shitty story tbh. I think it would have been better if she'd got his 'brain' home and started talking to him how she'd pulled off the perfect murder of him and got all his money or something, then for the pigs to come in and we find out the brain was a hoax and it was just a surveillance device all along.

I recall my Dad, reading this story from Roald Dahl`s 'Kiss Kiss" to me while camping by the Appalacian Trail, in 1963 ? It was a collection of shortstories, bizarre & original.

I read the written story long before watching the televised version. I didnt think it can ever be translated from print to screen.

I was right.

I remember watching these programs it was always on a Sunday night but I don`t remember seeing this episode but it was brilliant I used to watch her in the series where Donald Siden was her butler she had such a dry sense of humour..

The electroencephalograph sounded like Jean-Michel Jarre's music - very much in the tune of the time. I was expected to see the widow (or "widow") making love with the postman in front of the brain... This motif was much used at the time, in movies like Legacy (1978) and Strange Behaviour (1981(.

Way back in March 1961, Dahl had this story adapted as the first episode of a similar anthology series he hosted on CBS, "WAY OUT".

I haven't read the short story yet, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the line "I didn't marry him for his looks" is plucked straight from said story, as it was used in the "Way Out" adaptation.

If you are over 55-60 we all love Elaine Stritch in UK from her superb acting. She was one of the few Americans who endeared themselves into the British hearts in the post war years until the 80's.

It strikes me as quite insensitive of that doctor to subject that poor widow to the grotesque prospect that her husband's head is detached and alive.
