How to fix any Hydrostat for less than $100

Great quick post. This will help me a lot. I live about 40 minutes NW of Hudiksvall, Sweden. Hudiksvall is essentially the epicenter of hydraulic research, engineering, manufacturing and supply. If it's hydraulic and you can't get it here, you don't need it. If you have ever seen a Hiab crane, it was most likely built here. Hiab stands for Hudiksvall Industrial AB which is Hudiksvall Industrial, Inc. One of my best friends used to work as an engineer for Hiab. We are playing with some ideas for some small scale forestry equipment. Peter's expertise is in wired and wireless remote hydraulic controls. Boy, am I glad I moved from Oregon to Sweden!! I have been playing with some very interesting ideas that could or will combine some of Edison's ideas in my work. AND I CAN ONLY THANK YOU FOR INTRODUCING ME TO EDISON. I’ve had a zero turn for 4 years and at full speed i notice a slight difference between my right stick and left so i have to pull back on one to go in a straight line. I thought it was an adjustment issue but maybe one side has lower pressure because of a scratch on the plate… interesting

Fwiw a piece of plate glass is near perfect for flatness. If the scratch is minor use the glass and sandpaper to remove the groove.

I dont own anything with a hydrostat, and likely wont, but here i am watching anywyas 😂

Interesting. Guy at work asked me about his recently. I know swash plates pumps etc never worked on hydrastats. I was right though its just a swashplate pump simple

I had a clapped out Wheel Horse hydrostat years back. It did exactly this. Wish I'd have known but heck with it. If I ever run into it again I know.

Dealership won't do this. Wish I would've learnt this 5 mowers ago.

Hydrostat is good if the mower has a filter or a way to drain and refill the oil. Most don’t, so it’s just a matter of time before it stops working. I prefer mowers that have a manual transmission because those never quit working.

I wonder why they don't use rollers on those plungers like a roller lifter? 🤔 I know would mean more complexity but sure would reduce the friction and wear on the flip side of it. Thanks for the explanation, Rich!! 👌

Using a flat plate of glass and lapping compound, would that take out the defects such to make the plate flat again ? We lap in the air compressor valves this way but that is only working at 175PSI.

Great explanation. I have a stand on Scag mower with one of the hydraulics being weak. Could this be similar to the pump in myScag and would that be a similar problem? Just a thought. We’re getting finished for the season and would consider a teardown instead of replacement.

The wonders of what a surface grinder can do for a part and just how easily contamination in your hydraulic system can destroy it. It just takes one little piece of something and that plate is leaking.

or it is the 5c ball in the check valve for the charge pump found at the top of the hydrostat pump

this is what sepperates Canadian from "american" you explained it well enough to understand in two minutes where as an "american" will use twenty minutes yapping.

what if it acts like there is no neutral it wants to go forwards or backwards the window of neutral is small and it likes to fall into gear very easily

Or... get a flat piece of glass, sheet fine wet dry memory paper lube with oil, and spend an hr in a circular motion lapping it down.

I legit have that problem with my lawnmower i guess i gotta take an hour drive and bring it to dm precision in dunville this winter
