Franz Joseph was that long-lasting monarch that made people wonder when/if he would pass away.
Kind of like Queen Elizabeth II to the modern world

With all the mentions of moments that "threatened to tear the empire apart", it's actually a miracle that it stayed together for as long as it did

A big event that you didn't mention was the death of the Empress Elisabeth in 1898. She was one of the people that helped keep relations between the Emperor and the people.

Given everything that happened, its kinda crazy how literally everything went to shit because the AHE conquered Bosnia. If the Empire just left that patch of land, the world could very well be a very different place.

Not sure how the Hungarians were able to object to or could object to the Austro-Hungarian Empire entering the Franco-Prussian War on the side of France.

See,the compromise of 1867 only gave Hungary control over it's domestic policy/affairs, military policy and foreign affairs were still under Austrian control.

The Franco-Prussian War would be both under the umbrella of both foreign policy and military affairs.

Why Franz Joseph failed to grasp this is beyond me?

The hungarian population in Romania is not "seizable", the Romanians were a majority even then. It was t a hungarian population, but a hungarised one. Remember the politics of Hungary of imposing its language and even of changing birth names of the other nationalities they occupied.

I can imagine the reaction in France to the aftermath of the Seven Weeks War:

Random French official - "Sire, did we order a Venice?"

Napoleon III - "No,we ordered a Belgium and a Luxembourg,but not a Venice."

Random official - "What should we do with it?"

Napoleon III - "We don't want it, send it to Italy, it'll help complete the set."

You're right about the great powers being pissed by the annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Italy was so pissed that they were threatening not to renew the Triple Alliance treaty in 1912.

Why?

See one of the terms of the treaty was that any one part of the alliance couldn't take territory without consulting the other 2 beforehand.

In this case, Austria-Hungary didn't do it before annexing Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Germany, being the adult in the room, asked Italy what it would take for them not to walk away from the Triple Alliance, Italy wanted Lbya and a few islands near Asia Minor.

This was how Italy got Libya

Except it wasn't 600 years of Habsburg rule coming to an end. it ended with the death of Maria Teresa. By the usual rules that roayls used, this was the House of Lorraine. However the Habsburg name was kept to maintain continuity with the people.

Hungarisation is even nore evil when you realise that Hungarians are not alike anyone else in Europe, so slavs under them would need to change their language, culture, traditions... everything that made them what they are!

Funfact, after the fall of empire, many Hungarian officials in harder to reach positions in Slovakia didnt want to accept new conditions, so Slovakia had to call Czech soldiers for help
